Chiefs fall in home opener

Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs started well in their home opener Saturday night, but ultimately fell by a score of 4-2 to the Wheeling Nailers.

Mark McCutcheon opened the scoring for Johnstown on the power play, his first of the year, with a scorching one-timer that beat Wheeling goalie David Brown to the blocker side at 9:26 of the period. McCutcheon was set up inside the left-wing circle by a pass from Greg Gallagher, and Ray Macias earned the secondary assist. Johnstown ended the period up 1-0.

Wheeling would draw even at 2:51 of the second period on a power play goal of their own off of the stick of Aaron Clarke with assists from Rob Sirianni and Tommy Goebel. Goebel put a goal of his own past Ian Keserich at 10:15 to give the Nailers a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Nick Johnson scored on the power play at 18:28 of the second to stretch the lead to 3-1 after 40 minutes.

In the third, Johnson tallied his second of the night at 10:00 even with Jon Grecu adding an assist. Randy Rowe scored from on the doorstep with 1:37 left in the game to set the final at 4-2. Ryan Garlock and Bryan McGregor picked up their first assists of the season on the goal.

Johnstown ended the night 2-for-9 on the power play, while Keserich made 23 saves in taking the loss.
