Bombers Open Season With 5-4 Overtime Victory Over Cincinnati

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Bombers defeated the reigning Kelly Cup champion Cincinnati Cyclones 5-4 in overtime in front of a lively crowd of 7,680 at the Nutter Center tonight.

Jim Henkemeyer scored the game winning goal just 1:27 into the extra frame with assists from Joe Van Culin and Ryan Smyth.

The Cyclones had jumped out to an early lead when Thomas Beauregard scored his fourth goal in two nights just 20 seconds into the game. They built a 2-0 lead later in the first on a Stephen Werner goal. It was second-year Bomber Ryan Smyth that put Dayton on the board, assisted by Jarret Lukin and Greg Labenski. Defenseman Dominic D'Amour evened the score at 2-2 later in the first from Christian Gaudet and Mike McLean. Shots in the period favored the Bombers 19-4.

In the second, Matt MacDonald once again came out firing, gaining a 3-2 lead a mere 33 seconds into the period. Bombers rookie Nino Musitelli scored his first professional goal with helpers from Dan Riedel and Van Culin on the power play. Once again tied, the teams headed back to the locker room with the Bombers continuing to outshoot the Cyclones 16-6.

The Bombers earned their first lead of the game in the third, as Dan Riedel tallied his first of the season from Lukin. With the win in sight, Cincinnati played spoiler as Olivier Latendresse evened the score at 4 a piece with less than 4 minutes to play in regulation.

Shots on the night favored the Bombers 48-21. Bombers goaltender finished the game going 17 of 21, while the Cyclones' Kyle Gajewski was 43 of 48.

The Bombers next face the Johnstown Chiefs on Friday, October 24 for their first road contest of the season. Their next home game comes on Saturday, November 1 against the Cyclones at 7:30 PM at the Nutter Center.
