Utah Grizzlies News Release
West Valley City, Utah - The Utah Grizzlies (30-24-4-2) defeated the Stockton Thunder (30-22-4-5) 4-2 Friday night at Maverik Center before 8,409 fans.
"There were a lot of positive things throughout that whole bench tonight," said Grizzlies Head Coach Kevin Colley. "I liked the way the guys responded, they played like men, played together and I think they understand that we're playing a very good Stockton team and that's how you have to play to be successful and it takes every guy."
Utah took a 1-0 lead 10:03 into the first period as Paul McIlveen picked up a turnover in the circle as linemates Kevin Deeth and Shea Guthrie raced up ice to create the play.
Stockton though controlled the first half of the second period and took a 2-1 lead 9:15 into the middle frame. Utah, however responded 1:50 later scoring a power-play goal to tie the game at two. Rookie leading scorer Kevin Deeth buried his 12th of the year with McIlveen and Matt Clarke picking up assists.
The game-winning goal broke the 2-2 tie just 42 seconds later as Tom May crashed the net for his 16th goal of the year as linemates Max Tanguay and Hugo Carpentier picked up assists.
Shane Connelly earned his first Utah win by stopping all 13 shots that he saw in the third period, including the game saver with 10 seconds left with Stockton on a 6-on-4 power-play situation with an extra-attacker. Clarke (8) buried a nearly 200-foot empty-net goal at the buzzer to send the fans home happy. Connelly stopped 34 of 36 in the game.
Utah continues their series with Stockton Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. Utah's next win or the next Ontario Reign loss, will clinch the Grizzlies fourth-straight playoff berth and their fifth post-season appearance in the last six years.
