Aces "Power" Past Salmon Kings 6-1

Wes Goldie's second straight two-goal night spearheaded a four-goal second period - all on the power play - to lead the Alaska Aces over the Victoria Salmon Kings 6-1 from Sullivan Arena on Friday night. Goldie's two goals moved him into a second place tie in ECHL all-time goal scoring with 325 league tallies. The win kept the Aces two points ahead of Las Vegas for first place in the Western Conference, and they moved within two points of the idle Reading Royals for the league's best record. Alaska's record improved to 37-20-4 on the year, have won four straight games, and they have earned points in 11 of their last 12 games. The Aces and Salmon Kings wrap up their three-game set on Saturday night. The Aces got the only goal of the first period when Ethan Cox scored for the fourth straight game at 11:45 to make the score 1-0. Gerald Coleman, who was brilliant in his return to the Aces, made a terrific glove save to rob Chad Painchaud from the right side of the crease on a Kings power play on Victoria's best scoring chance of the period. The Salmon Kings outshot the Aces 11-8 in the period.

The second period onslaught began in the opening minute. Goldie scored 58 seconds into the frame on a carryover power play to make the score 2-0 Alaska. Following a Kiel McLeod hit to eh head of Curtis Fraser that resulted in McLeod's ejection, the Aces increased their lead to 3-0 on a major power play. Mark Isherwood scored on a rebound off the end glass at 13:44. Tyler Ruegsegger added a power play goal at 17:22 to get the lead to 4-0 Alaska. Then in the final minute of the frame, with just seconds left, Goldie tallied his second of the period on a slapshot from the high slot at 19:54 on a two-man advantage to give Alaska a 5-0 lead after two periods. The Aces outshot the Kings 25-4 in the frame. Netminder David Shantz was pulled following the second period.

Alaska made it six unanswered goals when Scott Howes scored on a rebound goal 5:28 into the third period. The Salmon Kings spoiled Coleman's shutout bid with their lone goal on a two-man advantage when Painchaud scored from the slot at 8:05 of the frame. Alaska's Jerad Stewart, who was palying for the first time since Jan. 22nd, was issued a match penalty for boarding late in the period, and the Salmon Kings had a lengthy two-man advantage, and five-minute major power play. However, Coleman and company closed the door, and Alaska held on for their fourth straight win overall, and third straight over Victoria.

Gerald Coleman (22-13-1) made 25 saves on 26 shots for the win. David Shantz (22-22-3) took the loss, making 28 saves on 33 shots. Chris Beckford-Tseu made two saves on three shots, and did not figure into the decision. The Aces power play went 4-9, while the Salmon Kings went 1-6. The Aces outshot the Salmon Kings 36-26 in the game.
