Griffins Reach Midpoint with 2-1 Win

SAN ANTONIO - The Grand Rapids Griffins (23-12-5-0) reached the midpoint of their season with a 2-1 victory over the San Antonio Rampage (15-15-5-0) on Tuesday night at the SBC Center. Grand Rapids is unbeaten in its last four games (3-0-1-0).

The win opens a six-point margin for the Griffins atop the West Division. The Griffins lead the American Hockey League with 14 wins in enemy territory. With 51 points through the first 40 games, the Griffins are on pace for their fourth 100-point campaign.

Grand Rapids opened the scoring when Michel Picard banged the rebound of Nathan Robinson's shot into an open net at 4:01 of the opening period. Derek King also assisted on the power play goal.

The Griffins doubled their cushion to 2-0 when Jiri Hudler and Kevin Miller executed a give-and-go. Miller capped the rush with his 13th goal of the season at 4:59 of the middle frame. Hudler's assist extends his point-scoring streak to a team-high 10 games. Jeff Nelson also assisted on the goal.

San Antonio answered in the third period when Petr Taticek slid a centering pass from Mark Smith past Marc Lamothe 2:41 into the third period. Lukas Krajicek also assisted on the goal.

Lamothe made 20 saves for his 14th win of the campaign.

Despite leaving the game early in the third period due to an injury, former Grand Rapids goaltender Simon Lajeunesse made 20 saves in a losing effort. Travis Scott relieved Lajeunesse at the 3:40 mark of the third period and stopped all four shots he faced.

The Griffins host Manitoba on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to start a six-game stand at Van Andel Arena, their second-longest in team history.
