Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - Frederic Cassivi made 29 saves to record his first shutout in 10 career appearances against Grand Rapids, leading the Chicago Wolves to a 3-0 win over the Griffins on Friday at Van Andel Arena.
Grand Rapids (42-25-8-0) suffered its second shutout in its last four home games and its third blanking in its last eight games overall, enabling the Wolves (38-25-9-3) to climb within four points of the Griffins' second-place standing in the West Division with five games remaining for each team.
The Griffins, who squandered an opportunity to pull within two points of first-place Milwaukee, will visit Allstate Arena for a rematch with the Wolves on Saturday at 8 p.m. The game will be televised live throughout West Michigan on WXSP-TV.
For the fourth time in their last five games, the Griffins fell behind 2-0. Jim Campbell banged home a rebound through a crowded slot at 8:11 of the opening period, then Daniel Corso beat Joey MacDonald with a blast from 25 feet on a breakaway during a 4-on-4 situation exactly six minutes later.
The Wolves added to their advantage just 1:38 into the second frame, as Shawn Heins ripped a shot past MacDonald from a few feet inside the blue line.
That would prove to be all the scoring on night. MacDonald rallied to post 31 saves, but the Wolves broke a six-game losing streak at Van Andel Arena and won for just the third time in their last 13 clashes with the Griffins.
