LOOKING AHEAD:

Hershey's chances of reaching the Calder Cup Playoffs for an 11th straight season could hinge on the Bears' ability to post a win over Philadelphia. The Phantoms entertain their in-state rivals on Friday (7:05 ET) having won each of their first 10 meetings this season, by a combined score of 40-11. Philly enters the weekend four points up atop the East Division; Hershey is two points behind Binghamton for the final playoff spot. Kirby Law and Boyd Kane are the Phantoms' co-leaders with 12 points each in the season series, and ex-Bear Neil Little is 5-0-0 with a 0.98 GAA against his former club. This will be the 93rd all-time regular-season game between the teams; Philadelphia leads the series, 47-37-8.

St. John's and Manitoba both need to win out the stretch to have a chance to make the postseason in the North Division; they go head-to-head in Winnipeg on Friday (7:30 CT, 10:00 NT) and Sunday (2:00/4:30). The Maple Leafs have won three straight one-goal games, including two in overtime, but still trail Toronto by nine points with six to play. The Moose have won five of their last seven, but have seven points to make up with just four games to go. Fedor Fedorov had three goals and four assists in two games for Manitoba during the Leafs' last visit to the 'Peg, back on the first weekend of the season. Ian White, a 19-year-old Winnipeg native, made his pro debut with St. John's on Wednesday.

Grand Rapids still has the West Division lead in its sights, but the Griffins could wind up closer to third place than first after a home-and-home with Chicago, beginning Friday at Van Andel (7:30 ET, 6:30 CT). The arch-rivals are on a collision course towards meeting in the division semifinals, and home-ice advantage could be critical as both teams have a league-high 23 home wins. The Griffins have won six of the clubs' eight meetings this year and 10 of the last 12 including last spring's playoff series sweep. Steve Maltais, named a Second Team AHL All-Star this week, has scored five goals against Grand Rapids this season; the Griffins' Jeff Nelson is one away from becoming the 70th player in AHL history with 500 career points.
