Springfield Falcons News Release
Providence, RI â Six days after the Springfield Falcons downed the Providence Bruins at The Nest, the P-Bruins won the re-match 3-0 before a crowd of 8,272 at the Dunkin' Donut Center on Friday evening. Providence goaltender Tim Thomas made 22 saves to register his seventh shutout of the season. Jean-Marc Pelletier made 45 saves in the Springfield net. Each Bruins goal came during special teams play as forwards Brad Boyes, Darren VanOene, and Pat Leahy provided the scoring.
The Bruins converted their fourth power play of the game to open scoring at the 10:07 mark of the second period. Boyes flipped a puck over Pelletier after the puck squirted to the left edge of the crease during a scramble in front of the net. The goal was Boyes' 31st of the season - fifth best in the AHL.
Providence added a shorthanded tally 3:50 later. Following a Pelletier save of a shot by Matt Herr, VanOene knocked the puck into the net as Falcons left wing Frantisek Lukes attempted to skate out of the crease with it.
Leahy scored a power-play goal for the Bruins at 8:41 of the third period by batting a loose puck in the slot through traffic for his 14th marker of the season.
The game marked the ninth time this season that the Falcons have been shutout. Thomas's seventh shutout of the campaign set a P-Bruins' franchise record.
The Falcons held a two-man advantage for 1:07 late in the first period, but were not able to capitalize.
Pelletier stopped each of the 18 shots he faced in the scoreless opening frame.
Five minutes into the second period, Falcons defenseman Todd Reirden saved a goal by knocking a puck out of the crease that had gotten past Pelletier.
The Falcons will return to the home ice of the Springfield Civic Center to host games on Saturday and Sunday. The club hosts the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday evening in a 7:35 contest. The Hershey Bears will make their lone Springfield appearance of the season on Sunday for a game that begins at 4:05 p.m. To order tickets by phone, please contact the Civic Center box office at (413) 787-6600 or (800) 639-8602.
