Elmira Jackals News Release
Maxime Gratchev scored three goals for the Elmira Jackals on Sunday night, but the Wheeling Nailers overcame the rookie's hat trick to defeat the Jackals 4-3 at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, WV.
Playing against former teammate Michael-Lee Teslak for the first time since Teslak was reassigned by the Philadelphia Flyers to Wheeling on Dec. 18, the Jackals got on the board early, when Tyler Donati found Gratchev in front who one-timed it past Teslak for the 1-0 advantage just 1:09 into the contest.
The Nailers struck three straight times to take a 3-1 lead, with two of the goals coming in the first period. Casey Pierro-Zabotel redirected a Kyle Bushee slap shot past Jackals goaltender Chris Holt to tie the game at 8:05 on the power play. Minutes later, Colin Power stickhandled to the right circle and beat Holt lower blocker to give the Nailers the lead for good at 15:23 of the first period. The Nailers scored their second of three power-play goals on the evening at 3:41 of the second period, when Andrew Lord jammed a puck past Holt to give the Nailers a 3-1 cushion.
Gratchev brought the Jackals to within a goal just a minute later, taking the puck at center ice and firing it past Teslak with the Jackals shorthanded to make it 3-2.
However, the Nailers reclaimed the two-goal lead at 12:54 of the second period when Ryan Hillier shot a puck past Holt after a defensive zone turnover to make it 4-2 Wheeling. Hillier's goal was the Nailers third power-play tally of the game.
Toward the end of the second period, Gratchev earned his first career hat trick, driving a puck high glove past Teslak for his 13th goal of the season at 15:11 of the second period, making it 4-3 in favor of Wheeling.
However, the Jackals were unable to get any of their six third-period shots into the net, and the Nailers held on for the 4-3 victory.
Holt stopped 23 of 27 Nailers shots, and his record dropped to 6-4-1-0. Teslak improved to 1-1 as a Nailer, making 26 saves on 29 Jackals attempts.
Elmira's record fell to 13-13-2-2, while the Nailers made their way back to. 500 at 15-15-1-1.
The Jackals play at Reading on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. in a battle between the American East Division's top two teams.
