Alaska Aces News Release
VICTORIA, BC - Wes Goldie scored twice Sunday evening as Victoria broke open a 2-2 game late in the second period and rolled to a 7-3 win over Alaska, its seventh straight overall and 10th in a row at home.
A crowd of 4,660 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre watched the Aces (11-15-2) lose their sixth game in a row, their longest skid in seven ECHL seasons. Alaska has dropped 11 of its last 14 games while Victoria has reached the.500 mark (13-13-3) for the first time this season after opening the year 1-9, including three straight in Anchorage to begin the 2009-10 season. The teams meet again tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. AT, with Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show coverage on KFQD 750 AM getting underway at 5:45 p.m.
Scott Reid started the game in goal for the Aces but lasted just 37 seconds, surrendering goals on the first two shots he faced. Andy Brant scored on a backhander 29 seconds into the contest and when Goldie buried the first of his two eight seconds later, Sebastian Dahm was called upon to relieve for the third time this season. He closed out the first period with 14 consecutive saves, and Alaska got back into the game when Brock McBride scored his first ECHL goal at 3:16 and Nick Mazzolini registered the equalizer with 2:15 left in the frame, his 13th goal in 15 games.
The score remained tied 2-2 until the Aces earned their first power play of the day late in the second period and had a chance to take their first lead. But instead, Olivier Latendresse scored shorthanded at 13:33 to give Victoria an advantage it would not relinquish. Goldie's second goal came two minutes later, and when Taylor Ellington flicked home a centering pass from Dirk Southern 33.9 seconds before the break with the Salmon Kings on a power play, the hosts suddenly held a 5-2 lead entering the final 20 minutes.
Nick Tuzzolino scored a power play goal with 4:29 left in regulation to bring the Aces to within 5-3, but that proved to be their last gasp. Empty-netters scored by Chad Painchaud and Brandon Roach 30 seconds apart in the final minute and a half accounted for the final margin. Victoria out-shot Alaska 41-31, with Dahm stopping 34 of the 37 shots he faced in relief of Reid but nevertheless seeing his personal record slip to 6-9.
