Johnstown Chiefs News Release

TOLEDO, Oh. - The Johnstown Chiefs were defeated by the Toledo Walleye by a 7-3 score on Sunday evening at the Lucas County Arena.

Playing their first road game since the Christmas break, the Chiefs were victimized by a couple of quick goals by the Walleye and fell into a 3-0 hole before the ten minute mark of the first. 26 seconds into the game, Christ Robertson put the home team on the board, and his goal was followed by J.C. Sawyer at the 3:10 mark. Off of a turnover in the neutral zone Justin Hodgman netted his seventh of the season to further extend the lead. Johnstown called a timeout at that point and looked to settle things down. Kris Mayotte kept the Walleye off of the board for the rest of the period and allowed for the Chiefs to chip into the deficit. With 1:12 remaining in the opening frame Chris Zarb potted his fifth of the season to close out the first period scoring.

Matching the first period scoring, Toledo outscored Johnstown 3-1 in the second to build a 6-2 advantage through 40 minutes of play. Bryan Ewing had the big period for the Walleye with a goal and an assist. He set up Malcolm MacMillan's third of the season at 4:18 and then scored his third of the season at 14:25. Those two scores sandwiched Justin McCutcheon's first goal as a Chief. A hard-working effort by Greg Gallagher and Sean Berkstresser set up McCutcheon on the doorstep and he lifted it over Jordan Pearce at 8:41. Mike Hedden finished off the second period scoring for Toledo at 18:07 with his ninth of the season.

In the third period the Chiefs and Walleye exchanged special teams goals with Ewing netting a shorthander while Connor Shields picked up a power play goal. Ewing's came first at the 4:54 mark and put the Walleye up 7-2. Shields' score on the power play was his team-leading 13th and seventh on the man advantage. Zarb added an assist for a two-point game while Chanse Fitzpatrick also earned a helper to give him four points (2G, 2A) in three games since the trade that brought him to Johnstown.

Kris Mayotte took the loss in net making 33 saves while the Chiefs went 1-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
