Reading Fightin Phils News Release

(MANCHESTER, NH) - The Reading Fightin Phils opened a week-long road swing on Thursday night, suffering a 9-1 loss in the first of a five-game set at Delta Dental Stadium.

Jose Gomez proved the bright spot for Reading, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles.

The Fisher Cats (13-22) (44-58) grabbed the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning off starter Gustavo Armas (0-1). With two on and two outs, Chad Spanberger lined a double to left-center to plate Forrest Wall and bump New Hampshire ahead, 1-0.

Reading (22-14) (61-42) loaded the bases in the third against Fisher Cats starter Justin Dillon, thanks to a pair of walks and a hit batter. Dillon (3-2) managed to strand all three, striking out Austin Bossart to end the frame.

Dillon went on to work six scoreless innings in the start, scattering four hits and three walks while striking out six.

Armas retired the first two batters on just five pitches in the bottom of the third, before the Fisher Cats blew it open.

Vinny Capra knocked a two-out single and stole second to open the rally. A wild pitch advanced him to third, and Spanberger walked to put runners at the corners. Kevin Smith followed with a liner to left to score Capra on the single, making it 2-0.

After a walk loaded the bases, Christian Williams shot a payoff pitch through the left side for a two-run single, and Logan Warmoth followed with a two-run double down the third base line, extending it to 6-0.

Wall capped the rally by driving a two-run home run to right, opening up an 8-0 lead for New Hampshire.

Garrett Cleavinger entered in relief of Armas in the fourth, and tossed two scoreless innings before the Fisher Cats filled the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Jeff Singer inherited the bases full, and Smith's sacrifice fly to left extended Reading's deficit to 9-0.

Luke Leftwich rejoined the Fightins on Thursday and tossed a scoreless eighth inning. Leftwich was activated from Lehigh Valley's injured list and returned to Reading, where he did not allow an earned run in the first month of the season.

Reading's lone run came in the ninth, when Josh Stephen crushed a first-pitch offering from Dany Jimenez out to right for his seventh long ball of the season.

The Fightins and Fisher Cats meet for game two of the five-game set on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 610 ESPN and the Fightins radio network starting at 6:00 p.m.
