Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

An early lead wasn't enough for the Winnipeg Goldeyes to sweep their fifth series of the season.

Winnipeg had a 4-1 lead after the second inning, but lost 8-5 to the Wichita Wingnuts Sunday afternoon before 2,232 fans in Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in the final game of a three-game series.

The Goldeyes still win the series and return to Winnipeg for a 12-game homestand on Tuesday with a two and a half game lead on the Sioux Falls Pheasants.

Gabby Martinez hit a three-run homer for the Goldeyes in the top of the first inning to start the series finale off with a bang, but the lead would be quickly diminished.

The Wingnuts responded with a run in the bottom of the first inning. After Winnipeg restored the three-run cushion in the second, Wichita slapped five runs on the scoreboard in the third inning to take a 6-4 lead.

Wichita added two more runs in the seventh inning thanks to a two-run single from Taylor Freeman, while Martinez hit his second home run of the game for Winnipeg - a solo shot - in the eighth inning to finish the scoring.

Starter Todd Privett made his Goldeyes debut, but lasted just two and a third innings to take the loss. He was on the hook for all six runs the Wingnuts scored in the first three innings.

Wichita starter Josh Lowey improved to 8-0 with the win, while Matt Navarez pitched the ninth inning for his fourth save.

Following an off day tomorrow, the Goldeyes begin a four-game series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Tuesday night at Shaw Park. Southpaw Chris Salamida (1-2, 4.87) will take the ball for Winnipeg. Game time is 7:00 p.m.

Great seats for all 12 games of the homestand are available by clicking on Ticketmaster.ca, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting the Shaw Park box office.
