Laber of Love for Saints Offense in 8-4 Win over RedHawks

FARGO, ND (July 1, 2012) - The St. Paul Saints hit a season high four home runs, two from Ole Sheldon, and they whacked around Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks starter Jake Laber in an 8-4 win on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.

In the second Sheldon got it going hitting his first homer of the game and 10th of the season, a solo shot to left, to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. With one out Willie Cabrera singled and Tanner Townsend followed with a two-run lined shot over the left field wall, his sixth of the season, putting the Saints up 3-0.

The RedHawks answered in the bottom of the inning against Saints starter Robert Coe. Jon Gaston led off with a single and with two outs Todd Jennings doubled him home to make it 3-1. Buddy Sosnoskie drove homer Jennings with a single to cut the Saints lead to 3-2.

Sheldon came calling again in the third when Jose Hernandez led off with a double and Jim Rapoport walked. Hernandez finished the game 3-5 with two doubles and a run scored while Rapoport had his nine game hitting streak snapped going 0-3. Sheldon crushed one over the left field wall, his second of the game and 11th of the season, to make it 6-2. Sheldon finished the day 2-5 with two homers and four RBI. He now has 51 homers in his Saints career, four shy of surpassing David Kennedy's (1994, 97-99) record of 54 and has 204 RBI tied for 2nd most in franchise history and just nine shy of breaking Brent Krause's (2007-11) franchise record.

The Saints made it 7-2 in the fourth when Jon Townsend joined his brother in the home run parade, drilling a solo shot to left, his third of the season. That was the last batter Laber would face going 3.0 innings allowing seven runs on seven hits, giving up four homers, while walking two and striking out one.

Coe gave up back-to-back singles to start the fourth and gave up his third run on a ground out to Marcos Rodrigues, but that began a string of 13 consecutive RedHawks retired. Coe went a season high 7.2 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four and picking up his fourth win of the season.

The Saints have Monday off and return home on Tuesday to take on the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Saints and Saltdogs will continue a game that was called because of the league's midnight curfew from June 20. The game will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the top of the seventh with the Saints leading 8-2 and the Saints as the visitors. The regularly scheduled game will be a nine inning contest that will start approximately 20-25 minutes at the conclusion of the continued game. The Saints will honor Military Moms during the Independence Day Celebration with Post-Game Fireworks Super Show presented by Cub Foods and Snapple.
