Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (31-11) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes (26-16) 8-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Josh Lowey worked seven strong innings to win his 19th consecutive decision dating back to last year, and allow Wichita's offense to overcome a pair of early three-run deficits.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the third, Sean Smith saw nine pitches from Winnipeg starter Todd Privett before drawing a leadoff walk. Smith went to third base on John Rodriguez's groundball double down the right field line. David Peralta helped slice the lead to 4-3 with a line drive double to left. Smith scored from third, while Peralta took second on Jon Weber's throw from left field. Third baseman Josh Mazzola cut off Weber's throw and attempted to get Peralta at second, but threw the ball off Peralta's body and into center field. Rodriguez scored on the error.

The rally continued when Jared McDonald bunted for a single, chasing Peralta to third base. Steve Carrillo ripped a double to left-center that scored Peralta with the tying run. After Privett struck out Taylor Freeman, Tommy Fitzgerlad walked to load the bases, and Privett was relieved by Kaohi Downing. With Mike Conroy at the plate, Downing threw a wild pitch that scored McDonald with the lead run. Conroy then singled through the right side to drive in Fitzgerald and give the Wingnuts a 6-4 lead.

After allowing four runs over the first two innings, Lowey shut down the Goldeyes over his final five innings of work. Lowey escaped a bases loaded, no out jam in the top of the third that preceded Wichita's five-run rally. Lowey retired 15 of the final 17 batters to face him, and did not allow a base hit over his last four innings pitched. Lowey allowed four earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Lowey is now 8-0 this season.

Freeman extended the Wingnuts lead in the bottom of the seventh. With second and third and two outs, Freeman lined a single to left to drive in Peralta and McDonald. Peralta and McDonald executed a double steal earlier in the inning.

Gabriel Martinez hit a solo home run, his second of the game, leading off the eighth, but Edgar Martinez kept Wichita in front through the end of the inning. Matt Nevarez struck out two during a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save of the year.

Martinez hit a two-out, three-run home run to center against Lowey in the top of the first. Peralta cut the lead to 3-1 with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning. David Naradowski hit a soft double down the right field line in the top of the second to make it 4-1 in favor of Winnipeg.

Privett took the loss, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in two and one-third innings. Privett walked three and struck out three.
