Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (30-11) lost 6-4 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes (26-15) at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Saturday night.

Winnipeg rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning to overcome a 4-3 Wingnuts' lead. It marked the sixth time this season Winnipeg has won when trailing after six innings--most in the American Association.

Luis Alen drew a leadoff walk against Edgar Martinez in the eighth and scored the tying run on the next pitch when Gabriel Martinez doubled to center field. A passed ball on a swinging third strike to Josh Mazzola set up first and third with no outs. Kyle Day ripped a single to right that scored Martinez and gave Winnipeg its first lead since the top of the first inning. A passed ball with David Narodowski at the plate brought in Mazzola with an insurance run.

Zach Baldwin, Billy Spottiswood, and Dexter Carter combined for two and two-thirds perfect relief innings to close out the win. Carter earned his fifth save of the year.

Price Kendall led off the game with a walk and took third on Chris Roberson's single down the left field line. A wild pitch scored Kendall with the game's first run, but the Wingnuts tied the game in the bottom half without needing a hit. Ryan Khoury and Sean Smith drew back-to-back walks against Goldeyes' starter Matthew Rusch. After Rusch struck out John Rodriguez, David Peralta beat out a potential double play groundball to put runners on the corners. With Jared McDonald at the plate, Peralta stole second, while Khoury broke for home and scored when Alen threw down to second.

Wichita manufactured three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead. Taylor Freeman singled to right-center leading off and advanced to second on Tommy Fitzgerald's hit-and-run single to shortstop. Mike Conroy sacrificed the runners to second and third, and then Khoury drove in Freeman with a groundball to shortstop. Smith reached first on an infield single that deflected off of Rusch's glove. Fitzgerald scored to make it 3-1. After Rodriguez drew an intentional walk, Peralta lined a single to left-center that drove in Smith with the Wingnuts' fourth run.

With second and third and two outs, Alen singled to right in the top of the fifth to cut Wichita's lead to 4-3.

Jeff Nadeau started and took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on five hits in five innings. Nadeau was making his first start since August 21st, 2010 and struck out four while walking five.

Rusch also took a no-decision, allowing four earned runs on five hits in six and one-third innings. Rusch struck out four and walked five. Rusch and the Goldeyes' bullpen held the Wingnuts to two baserunners over the final seven innings of the game

Martinez took the loss for the Wingnuts, allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits in the eighth.

Jared Simon, Nick Walters, and Matt Nevarez each worked a scoreless inning. Mike Conroy had an eight-game hitting streak come to an end.
