Goepfert, Lynx blank Ice Pilots on Friday, 3-0
March 21, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
For Lynx goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert it had seemed like an eternity since his last win. After all, Goepfert had dropped his last seven starts and hadn't won a game since February 8th in Florida. However, Goepfert and the rest of the Lynx defense, especially the penalty kill, put in a workmanlike performance on Friday night, blanking the Pensacola Ice Pilots by a score of 3-0. The win snapped the Lynx three game losing streak and gave them their 29th win of the season in front of a crowd of 2,850 at the James Brown Arena.
The Lynx got on the board first in the 1st period, as #11 Matt Christie won a clean face-off to #20 Matt Auffrey, who redirected the puck to the point to #6 Will Bodine who hammered a slapshot past a screened Mike Brodeur for a 1-0 Lynx lead. The 2nd period saw an all out assault by the Ice Pilots, as they had four power plays in the period alone, but the Lynx penalty kill helped out by Goepfert shut the door on Pensacola's chances to score. Late in the period, the Lynx increased to the lead to 2-0 as #17 Anthony Battaglia's shot from the point was stopped by Brodeur who gave up a rebound to #9 Louis Goulet. After Goulet's first attempt, #22 Shane Hynes swooped in a batted home the loose puck to give the Lynx the two-goal lead heading to the intermission.
The 3rd period was more Goepfert and more penalty killing magic from the Lynx, and thanks to an unassisted goal from #16 Chase Watson, the lead took a 3-0 lead midway through the period and never looked back. The Lynx finished 0 for 4 on the power play while the Ice Pilots finished 0 for 7. The Lynx will host the Gwinnett Gladiators on Saturday, March 22nd at 7:05pm at the James Brown Arena in Augusta.
