Dayton Bombers News Release
Trenton, NJ- The Dayton Bombers (27-27-5-5) continued their three games in three nights weekend stopping in New Jersey to take on North Division rival Trenton (25-33-3-4) at the Sovereign Bank Arena. The game started out fast as just 1:40 in, the Bombers' Britt Dougherty and the Devils' Thomas Harrison got the punches flying earning them both 5 minute majors; their first of two five minute majors for fighting in the period. The Devils were able to light up the scoreboard first as Jim Henkel was able to capitalize on the power play to earn his 21st of the year. Dayton didn't wait long to strike back though as Brad Bonello tied the game at 1 less than four minutes later at the 15:11 mark, when he snuck one in past Trenton's Jason Smith. The goal gave Bonello his 15th of the season, with the assists credited to Matt Beaudoin and Greg Labenski. Trenton did get the lead back, however, with less than a minute left in the period as Trevor Kell earned his 16th of the season on the power play, sneaking it past Dayton's Jeremy Duchesne. The 1st period saw a total of 18 shots (8 for Dayton, 10 for Trenton) and 28 total penalty minutes, including 20 minutes for fighting.
The 2nd period brought more action and more penalty minutes as there was a total 28 penalty minutes between both teams, including two unsportsmanlike penalties before the period started. The frame saw 5 shots find the back of the net, with the lone goal for the Bombers coming from recently acquired Jim Henkemeyer, who earned his first goal of the season with the help from Mike Walsh and Scott Kelman. Trenton notched their third power play goal of the game as Tony Zancanaro beat Duchesne for his 2nd point of the night. The Devils earned 3 more goals on 12 total shots, while Dayton did outshoot Trenton in the period firing 16 shots on net.
Trenton kept the scoring going in the 3rd as Tony Zancanaro earned his 2nd goal and 3rd point of the night for the lone goal of the period. The Devils were able to capitalize well on the power play as they earned 4 of their 7 goals with the extra man. Dayton outshot Trenton 15-13 in the final frame and 39-35 for the game. The Bombers do still hold a seven-point lead for the fifth and final playoff spot over Trenton with just 8 games remaining in the regular season. The Dayton Bombers travel back to Elmira tonight to face-off against the Jackals tomorrow with the puck slated to drop at 7:35.
