Sacramento River Cats News Release
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - River Cats outfielder Jake Goebbert reached base four times, finishing 3-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, a walk, and a double to help the River Cats defeat the Las Vegas 51s by a score of 7-4 on Wednesday evening at Cashman Field.
The River Cats set the tone for the game early, as Shane Peterson led off the contest with a double to left-center field off of New York Mets top prospect Noah Syndergaard. After a pair of River Cats groundouts, Kent Matthes singled to right field, scoring Peterson to give the River Cats an early 1-0 lead. Sacramento added another run in the following frame when Anthony Aliotti scored on a double-play ball, putting the Cats ahead 2-0.
The 51s tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the River Cats took the lead for the final time in the top of the second when Jose Martinez and Alden Carrithers delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles. After the teams traded runs in the sixth, Sacramento tacked on two more in the top of the ninth. Las Vegas scored once more in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough, as the River Cats held on to win 7-4.
Ryan Ortiz went 2-for-4 with two runs and a double, while Peterson finished 2-for-5 with a run, an RBI, and a double of his own. Righty Sean Murphy picked up his first win for Sacramento, yielding three earned runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Evan Scribner twirled a scoreless eighth inning in his 2014 River Cats debut before Joe Savery closed out the game with a one-run ninth inning.
Syndergaard suffered his first loss of the season, giving up four runs-three earned-on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Bobby Abreu went 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI, and walk for Las Vegas, while Eric Campbell went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
The Cats will look to salvage a series-split at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday Night at Cashman Field when Joe Blanton (1-0, 9.00 ERA) faces 51s righty Jacob deGrom (0-0, 0.00 ERA) in the series finale.
Sacramento kicks off its 2014 home slate on a Fireworks Friday when the Salt Lake Bees visit Raley Field on April 11 to open an eight-game River Cats homestand.
