Fresno Grizzlies News Release
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Third baseman Adam Duvall hit a two-out, first-inning grand slam on the first pitch he saw to jumpstart the Fresno Grizzlies (2-5) to a 10-7 win over the Salt Lake Bees (4-3) in front of 3,782 fans at Smith's Ballpark Wednesday night.
The four-run first was met with two more runs in the second and a single run in the third to put the Grizzlies on cruise control until the middle innings. Back-to-back doubles by Guillermo Quiroz and Darren Ford in the second led to a run and an error by Bees shortstop Grant Green on a Joe Panik grounder led to another. Tony Abreu continued his RBI streak (three straight games) by doubling in Adam Duvall in the third to give the Grizzlies a 7-0 lead.
After chasing Salt Lake starter Jose Alvarez by the fifth inning, Fresno tallied two runs on reliever David Carpenter when Gary Brown tripled in a run and scored on a Javier Herrera single. Up 9-1, Fresno appeared destined for an easy win.
But Salt Lake would make a game of it beginning in the sixth inning when Mitch Lively (W; 4 ER/5.0 IP) exited the game after yielding three straight singles. George Kontos entered the game and allowed an infield single to load the bases and then was besieged by CJ Cron who deposited a grand slam over the left field wall, making it a 9-6 game.
Kontos (3 ER/2.2 IP) would clamp down after the mistake, but would give way to Heath Hembree after surrendering a two-out RBI single in the eighth to Brennan Boesch.
Hembree (S; 1.1 IP) recorded the third out in the eighth and the first two in the ninth before encountering some adversity. A double by Matt Long brought up Grant Green, who had homered off Hembree the year prior in a similar situation. This time Green connected well, but flew out to the center field warning track to end the game.
Gary Brown (3-5, RBI, 2R) extended his on-base streak to seven games by falling a homer short of the cycle, while Tony Abreu (3-5, 2B, 2 RBI) extended his hitting streak to six games. Darren Ford (2B, RBI, R) and Adam Duvall (GS) each had two hits.
Fresno starter Mitch Lively retired 12 of the first 13 batters faced before encountering trouble in the fifth.
Notes:
* The last time Fresno played a game where each team hit a grand slam was August 8, 2009 vs. New Orleans. Brett Carroll notched one off Fresno's Shingo Takatsu in the fifth, while Fresno's Jesus Guzman took Zephyrs' Carlos Vasquez out in the ninth. The Zephyrs won 14-9 despite an eight-run ninth for the Grizzlies * Adam Duvall's grand slam was his first since July 7, 2011 as a member of Low-A Augusta. The homer was a go-ahead ninth inning slam at Asheville (COL) in a victory for the GreenJackets that made a winner out of Brett Bochy.
