Saskatoon Blades News Release

SWIFT CURRENT, SK - It could not have been written any better in their final meeting at the Credit Union iplex for the Blades. The last time the Blades scored 12 goals in a game was November 19th, 1991 against the Victoria Cougars. Safe to say it's been long overdue for the Blades to have a game of this magnitude.

"It was a big win against a divisional rival. It was nice to get those goals but the third period we gave up quite a few which isn't a good thing to have but it was good to get the two points tonight," mentioned Connor Gay who finished with five points tonight.

The top line set the tone early as Connor Gay's backhand pass goes to a streaking Ryan Graham who crashed the net just 16 seconds into the game to make it 1-0 Saskatoon.

The Blades kept coming as the Colton Waltz point shot was tipped by Gay with just under five minutes into the first period to give the Blades a 2-0 lead.

Connor Gay would continue his hot start to the game by making a beautiful pass off the wall which managed to find Cameron Hebig who busted down the wing and goes backhand making it 3-0. That goal would see Travis Child's night end early giving up 3 goals on 6 shots.

As the Broncos power-play expired, a nice give and go play between McCarty and Shmyr to Soshnin who finished the nice passing play extending the lead to 4-0.

Everyone was contributing the first period including the kid line. A nice play by MacKenzie who threw it on net intended for Hausinger ended up going to a wide open Josh Paterson for the Blades fifth goal on just their ninth shot of the game.

The Broncos eventually got on the board as Jon Martin threw a shot on net with 1:14 left in the first but went off a defender and in past Hamm to get Swift Current on the scoresheet. It was 5-1 after 20 minutes with Saskatoon generating 13 shots that period.

Everything was coming up Blades in the second. A Blades power play just 2 minutes in the period, Braylon Shmyr from the right circle with a gorgeous saucer pass to Hebig who kicked to Graham for a wide open cage for his second of the game it's 6-1 Blades at that point.

Shorthanded Blades? No problem! Mason McCarty stole it from Colby Sissons at the point and bursted down the ice and decked out Taz Burman going backhand to make it 7-1.

The Broncos frustration would start boil over, as Kade Jensen is given his second major and game misconduct penalty in as many games giving the Blades a 5 minute power play.

On the initial power play, Connor Gay found Nick Zajac from the sweet spot at the circles and one timed it to make it 8-1 Blades.

The 5 minute power play would pay dividends for Saskatoon as Connor Gay from the side of the would get the rebound from the Ryan Graham shot for his fifth point of the evening for a 9-1 hockey game for Saskatoon with under four minutes to play in the second.

15 seconds after Gay made it 9-1, Mason McCarty got his second goal from a Waltz point shot and the puck went right to McCarty and went backhand on Burman as the Blades enter double digits for goals as it was 10-1.

Swift Current turned it into high gear for the third period as they weren't going down without a fight.

A Broncos power play to start the third. Lane Pederson's initial shot is stopped but 48 seconds stopped once but gets his own rebound 48 seconds into the third.

With the Blades man advnatage, it was a case of anything you can do I can do better by the Broncos. Dustin Perillat turned it over at the point sent Jamal Watson on a shorthanded breakaway who scored to make it 10-3. An exact duplicate of the shorthanded goal by McCarty earlier in the game.

The Blades power play was on fire tonight finishing 5 for 7 on the man advantage. Their fifth power play goal came from Colton Waltz who unloaded a bomb and goes top corner on Travis Child who was put back in net for the third period.

Some defensive issues would come creep up on the Blades as the Broncos managed to score three more times in the third period.

1:17 after the Blades got their 11th goal, Cameron Hebig turned the puck over to Scot Feser in the slot and beats Hamm blocker side to give them their fourth goal of the game.

The Broncos would get two quick goals in a 28 second span from Glen Gawdin and Tyler Steenburgen with 7:36 left to play in hopes to put the Blades on their heels.

Josh Paterson sealed the deal as he got his second goal of the game as he stole the puck from Khaira for his twelfth of the year making it a dozen in goals.

The Blades have won all meetings in Swift Current this season. A tough building to play in described by Bob Woods but knows there's still another game to be played tomorrow night. "It's a tough building to play in and to win all the games in this building it's something to feel good about but we want to win at home too. We got a tough team in P.A. coming in tomorrow and it's going to take everything we got to get it done."

"It was a big game in the offensive zone but you can't give up five goals in the third period but we got the two points and that's all that matters," says Nick Zajac on the teams climb for a playoff spot.

With this win, Saskatoon is nine points back of the Oil Kings who hold the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Blades will have to regroup quickly as they welcome the Prince Albert Raiders to SaskTel Centre tomorrow night.
