Game Day: Blazers Get Rematch with Royals After Friday Night Loss
February 20, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Kamloops Blazers News Release
The Blazers will get a chance to avenge their loss at the hands of the Victoria Royals last night that ended their four-game win streak.
Kamloops is in Victoria for the final of these team's eight meetings on the season. The Blazers are 2-5-0-0 in the season series.
Last night's 4-1 loss was the first in almost two weeks for the Blazers (27-23-5-3), who now sit eighth in the Western Conference standings. To make matters more difficult for the Blazers is the fact that all the teams around them in the playoff race - Portland, Tri-City, Spokane and Prince George - picked up points last night.
Despite the setback last night, Blazers Head Coach Don Hay is happy with his team's outlook, and talked about some contributing factors for his team's improved play in recent outings.
"I think what's happening is to get [Ryan] Rehill back, he's a real competitive player for us in the back end. It moves everybody back to play the minutes that they're more comfortable with, so to get him back and get more of a rotation on the back end, and [goalie Connor Ingram] has been good; it makes guys more competitive", Hay said.
Rehill has three goals and five points in four games since returning from a seven-game absence due to injury, and the Blazers are 3-1-0-0 in that time. Ingram, meanwhile, has stopped 34 or more shots in each of the past five games, and was named the WHL's goalie of the week for the week of Feb. 8 - 14.
The Blazers will need these two and other key players to pace them tonight, as the rematch with the Royals won't likely be any easier. Victoria is now 14-2-1-0 in their past 17 contests.
Tonight's game is the second of a three-in-three set for the Blazers this weekend, as they'll finish off in Vancouver against the Giants on Sunday night. Their four-game road swing concludes next Friday against the Everett Silvertips.
