Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB -- The Medicine Hat Tigers knew they had to play well as Friday night began parents weekend at the Canalta Centre. The mothers and fathers of each player made the trek to Medicine Hat to watch their boys play the Calgary Hitmen. Medicine Hat gave all they had in order to make their parents proud.
The opening period was highlighted by the play of Nick Schneider in the Tigers net. The opening 20 minutes was just the first chapter in what would be a stellar night for the 18 year old. Calgary would fire 17 shots on goal in the period and Radel Fazleev buried his 17th of the season as Schneider couldn't stop the clear cut breakaway. Each team got an opportunity on the man advantage but couldn't solve Hitmen starter Nik Amundrud. The Tigers trailed 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes, despite getting their own quality chances.
For one Tiger player parents weekend is a bit different as Connor Clouston has his father barking out plays and line changes behind the bench in Head Coach Shaun. The local product must have made his dad proud when he let go a blast from the point which fooled Amundrud and knotted the game at 1's. Steven Owre continued his outstanding play since returning from injury, recording an assist on Clouston's 2nd of the year. Later in the period an unfortunate break caused the Tigers to go down a man and Jakob Stukel potted his 27th of the year on the power play to put the Hitmen up 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Medicine Hat struck early once again in the final period when Mason Shaw potted his 14th of the year on the power play. Schneider, who should get an assist on the play made an unbelieveable shorthanded save to start the transition back into the Calgary zone. David Quenneville fired a pass to Shaw who went in on a partial break and snuck the puck five hole on Amundrud to tie the game. Medicine Hat's speed would prove pivotal when Chad Butcher took a breakaway feed on a shorthanded break of his own, this time the 19 year old would solve the goaltender and put the Tigers up 3-2 just before the midway point.
In a final flurry to end the game, Medicine Hat was on their heels, protecting the lead and the crease for Schneider who was fantastic in this one. The Tigers goalie would go on to stop all 18 shots in the 3rd period and 48 overall to get an ethusiastic applause from the Tigers faithful as the game's 1st star.
