Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings were big winners on and off the ice Friday night at Westman Communications Group Place.
The Wheat Kings jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead, then added three more in the second on their way to an exciting 8-3 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings before over 4,800 noisy fans during the club's 3rd Annual "Pink the Rink" Night.
Tim McGauley and Nolan Patrick scored two goals each for the Wheat Kings, who clinched a playoff spot for the fifteenth time in the past sixteen years.
Patrick has now scored goals in eight straight games, which is the longest in the Western Hockey League this season. It's also the longest goal-scoring streak for a Wheat King since former captain Mark Stone had a pair of 8-game goal scoring streaks during the 2011-12 campaign.
As for McGauley, the 20-year old Washington Capitals' prospect has moved to within a single point of 250 in his WHL career.
Ty Lewis, Tyler Coulter, John Quenneville and Duncan Campbell - with the Smitty's Lucky 7 goal - rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who got a solid 38-save performance from veteran Jordan Papirny, who was called upon to make 31 saves over the course of the last two periods.
Brett Pollock scored twice in a losing cause.
With the win, Brandon's first against the Oil Kings this season, the Wheat Kings improved to 37-17-2-2 and moved ten points up on second place Prince Albert in the Eastern Division. It also moved them to within three points of the Eastern Conference leading Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Besides providing another Lucky 7 Free breakfast at Smittys to those in attendance, the team's "Pink the Rink" night turned out to be another tremendous success for the Canadian Cancer Society.
The game's jersey auction, T-Shirt sale and raffle, generated nearly $28,000. While Tyler Coulter's number 21 went for $1,000 earlier this week on 94.7 Star FM, seven more jerseys reached the $1,000 mark on Friday.
Leading the way were Philadelphia Flyers' prospect Ivan Provorov and captain Macoy Erkamps. Both went for $1,500 each.
Others were Nolan Patrick ($1,325), Jayce Hawryluk ($1,300), Tim McGauley ($1,125), Jordan Papirny ($1,100), Logan Thompson ($1,050) and Reid Duke ($1,000).
Three of Jordan Papirny's game used sticks were also auctioned off while Jaeger White's number 22 is still available to those western Manitoba hockey fans purchasing a raffle ticket, which are being sold at three for $10. The winning draw will be made on Wednesday, February 24th.
Raffle tickets are available at the Canadian Cancer Society office in Brandon or by calling (305) 571-2800.
Well over $80,000 has been raised for the Canadian Cancer Society during the first three years of the hockey club's "Pink the Rink" promotion.
Next home game for the Wheat Kings won't be until Wednesday, March 2nd when they play host to Saskatoon in the second and final Rain Check game of the season. Any unused ticket (from December 27th, 2014) can be exchanged at the box office for a free ticket to this game.
In the meantime, the Wheat Kings will begin a 5-game in seven night road trip on Sunday night in Prince Albert against the Raiders.
