Glassey's Scoreless Outing Not Enough in Chinooks' 1-0 Loss

June 20, 2021 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Lakeshore Chinooks News Release

Chinooks starter Joe Glassey registered his first scoreless start of the season.

The right-hander of Illinois eliminated continuous contact on a two-hit outing though the Chinooks' order failed to produce.

Despite scoring three runs in the makeup game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Kalamazoo Growlers found a spark late to defeat Lakeshore, 1-0, at Kapco Park.

Glassey represented a spare bright spot for Lakeshore (10-9) throughout the back half of a doubleheader in which three of seven base runners were stranded in the eighth inning. After leaving two runners in scoring position on base in the seventh, Kalamazoo (7-12) developed its rhythm off Chinooks reliever Jacob Henderson. A leadoff sacrifice bunt place runners on the corners--a move that ultimately decided the narrow margin.

Growlers' right fielder T.J. Williams, in spite of a 0-for-4 performance, scored the contest's only run on a wild pitch. Henderson's 2-2 pitch to first baseman Anthony Calarco, who led Kalamazoo with three walks, slipped away from catcher Stephen Hrustich for a haunting error.

Both Glassey and Kalamazoo's Adam Wheaton battled for five innings on the mound, each working out of their own jams to eliminate scoring threats early.

The war of attrition went to Wheaton, as he continued battling in the sixth, striking out two-straight and forcing designated hitter Brennen Bales to fly out to second base.

Lakeshore's half of the seventh started to look different on a throwing error on Growlers' shortstop Dominic Pitelli, as the Miami Hurricane booted a grounder. Hrustich stood on first base, yet failed to reach scoring position on a fielder's choice to first baseman Griffin Doersching.

Wheaton, a senior of Trine University, settled once more and retired two-straight Lakeshore batters on lineouts to end the seventh and hold his opponent to two hits.

With time starting to run out, the urgency amplified in the Chinooks' dugout. A swinging strikeout and a fly out to right field eliminated another Kalamazoo scoring threat, offering Lakeshore an opportunity for an eighth-inning rally.

Center fielder Collin Mathews waved and missed at a 1-2 offering though Mike Sears earned a one-out walk, ending Wheaton's night. Right-handed reliever Braden Forsyth filled Wheaton

and immediately fired a wild pitch to send Paul Toetz, pinch running for third baseman Dalton Doyle, and Sears to second base.

The Chinooks' late rally began to foment upon right fielder Jackson Gray's one-out walk, though the play represented their final base runner. Second baseman Colton Bauer watched a 2-2 slider tack the outside edge of the zone, a called strike three that baffled the Grove City, Ohio native.

Bales dug in as the go-ahead run and fell behind in the count early. The two-way player ended Lakeshore's late comeback attempt on a strikeout for his second of the game.

Henderson was tacked with the loss and Wheaton garnered his third win. Forsyth was credited with the save.

Lakeshore and Kalamazoo will get back together for the final matchup of the weekend series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
