February 12, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
More Records: Colton Fretter set a new Gladiators team record for most goals in a season posting his 34th goal of the year in Sunday's 7-4 loss to the Augusta Lynx. Fretter moved ahead of Kevin Doell, who set the record of 33 during the Gladiators inaugural 2003-04 season, and then matched by Guillaume Desbiens last year. With 34 goals on the season, Fretter needs 11 goals to tie the all time team record of 45 goals set by Mark Turner during the 1999-00 season with the Mobile Mysticks.
Looking for 100: Brad Schell is looking to become the first player to record 100 points in a season since Buddy Smith of the Arkansas RiverBlades notched 104 during the 2002-03 season. Schell currently has 94 points on the year and leads his line mate Scott Mifsud, who ranks second in the league in scoring, by 22 points.
Penalty Shot Anyone? Colton Fretter was unsuccessful on a penalty shot for the Gladiators in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Augusta Lynx. It was the first time in team history that the Gladiators were awarded a penalty shot in back-to-back games as Matt York was unsuccessful against Texas on Friday night. Gwinnett has been awarded five penalty shots this season, one shy of the total number of penalty shots awarded during the organization's first 10 years in the ECHL. Scott Mifsud was the first player to successfully convert on a penalty shot in a regular season game in the organization's history as he beat Ben Gray of Pensacola on December 29th.
The 1-2 Punch! Brad Schell and Scott Mifsud continue to lead the league in scoring as both collected a goal and an assist for Gwinnett in Sunday's 7-4 loss against Augusta. The pair has combined to post over 175 points on the season as Schell has collected 94 points while Mifsud has recorded 72 points for Gwinnett. Mike Pandolfo of Trenton, Mike Lang of Augusta and teammate Colton Fretter shares third in the ECHL with 63 points on the season, 9 back of Mifsud.
A true Advantage: The Gladiators continue to lead the ECHL on the power play this season converting over 25% of their chances on the man advantage. Gwinnett has collected 91 power play goals this season. Gwinnett needs just 24 power play goals to tie the ECHL record for power play goals in a season. The Nashville Knights hold the current ECHL record for most power play goals in a season with 115 set during the 1995-96 season. To set a new ECHL record for power play goals in a season, the Gladiators need to average 1 power play goal per game over their final 24 games of the regular season.
Team Equipment Bags: Sunday, February 18th is the Gladiators team equipment bag night for the first 2,000 fans when the Gladiators host the Charlotte Checkers at 4:05 p.m. The Gladiators team equipment bag night is sponsored by Clayton Dental, Charter Communications and WDUN, News Talk 550.
