Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

COMING UP: The Cincinnati Cyclones (24-17-2-2) begin the week in first place in the North Division of the American Conference of the ECHL. The Cyclones have four games this week, all against members of the North Division, with three of them to be played at U.S. Bank Arena. Wednesday night (Feb. 14), Reading rolls into town for a 7:30pm showdown. Friday night (Feb. 16), Johnstown visits at 7:30pm. The next night (Saturday, Feb. 17), the teams meet in Johnstown at 7pm. Sunday (Feb. 18), the week ends with a 2pm tilt against Toledo.

LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: Last Wednesday (Feb. 7), the Cyclones played their lone game of the week in a 4-1 loss to Johnstown. The Chiefs used goals sixteen seconds apart in the first period to propel Johnstown to a 2-0 lead less than three and a half minutes into the contest. Greg Stewart netted his sixth goal, with Chad Starling and Mathieu Aubin picking up the assists. Goals in the second and third period by Johnstown would close out the scoring. Dov Grumet-Morris absorbed the loss, stopping 16 shots in the defeat.

IN THE COMMUNITY: The Cyclones skated with fans at Fountain Square on Saturday (Feb. 10) from noon-3pm. It was the third, and final, installment of the team skating at the outdoor facility. Between the three visits, nearly 1500 people skated with the team. Cedrick Desjardins, Greg Gallagher, Ben Gray, Nick Martens, Jarred Mohr and Brian Mullally all participated. On Sunday (Feb. 11), the team participated in the annual 'Pucks-N-Pasta' dinner, sponsored by the Cyclones Fan Club. The players served as guest waiters at the event that included a silent auction with proceeds going to the Neediest Kids of All and the Ruth Lyons Children's Fund.

VIEW TO A KILL: The Cyclones have killed 89.2 percent of the shorthanded situations they have faced this season. Cincinnati has extinguished all but ten of the 128 man-disadvantage scenarios (92.2 percent) handled since moving into first place in the North Division seven weeks ago (Dec. 23). Two of the ten power play goals allowed have been five-on-three situations. Cincinnati has scored two shorthanded goals during this period also.

STARLING A SHINING LIGHT: Cyclones defenseman Chad Starling is currently riding a three game point scoring streak (1-2-3), his longest of the season. It is his longest stretch since a four-game stretch (1-3-4) from Jan. 20-28 of last season--which was Chad's career-long. Starling ranks second among ECHL defenseman, and fifth among all ECHL players, with a +20 plus/minus rating. Starling has gone eight games even, or better, in that category. The last time Chad wound up on the negative side of the stat sheet was the January 19 game against Toledo.

AUBIN ENJOYS THE QUEEN CITY: Cyclones forward Mathieu Aubin has three goals and seven assists in his last seven games. The rookie from Sorel, Quebec was returned to Cincinnati by Hamilton (AHL) on Jan. 25 and the streak began upon Aubin's return. In his last eleven games in a Cyclones uniform, Mathieu has six goals and eight assists for 14 points. This streak coincided with the Cyclones move into first place on Dec. 23. Aubin's father, Normand, a former NHLer--also played with the Cincinnati Tigers (Central Hockey League) during the 1981-82 season at U.S. Bank Arena (then known as the Coliseum).

FTOREK NAMED PLAYER OF WEEK: Cincinnati Cyclones forward Sam Ftorek was named In Glas Co ECHL Player of the Week, for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4. Ftorek, 32, collected five goals (two of them game winners) and two assists for seven points that week as the Cyclones went 3-0-1. Ftorek, a native of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, is the second Cyclones player this season to collect a weekly honor from the ECHL. Cedrick Desjardins was twice the Rbk Hockey Goaltender of the Week (week of Oct. 15-21 and week of Jan. 8-14). Sam is the first forward/defenseman from Cincinnati to win the Player of the Week honors from the league since Garret Prosofsky claimed the title during the span of March 8-14, 2004. It is the eleventh time in the history of this club that the team has had a Player of the Week from the ECHL.

QUICK HITS: The Cyclones have come from behind to win eight games this season, as the club has collected 19 points in the standings in contests which the team has trailed at sometime this year...Cincinnati's .578 winning percentage is the best in the North Division...The Cyclones are 15th in the league in penalty minutes, averaging 22.4 minutes per game. Cincinnati ranks sixth in the ECHL in major penalties (48), these penalties account for 23.7 percent of all penalty minutes by the club...The Cyclones have five wins each over Dayton, Reading and Toledo...Cincinnati's 31 goals allowed in the third period are the fewest permitted in the ECHL this season...The Cyclones limited Johnstown to two third period shots on goal last Wednesday (Feb. 7), a season low.

UNPACK THE BAGS, WE'RE GOING TO BE HERE A WHILE...: The Cyclones begin the week as the co-leaders of the North Division. Cincinnati moved into a share of the top spot on Dec. 23 and has not been moved from first place since (that's 52 days in a row for those of you following along).
