Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - Mr. Belding himself, Dennis Haskins, from the hit TV show Saved by the Bell was greeting fans, but it was the Kalamazoo Wings turnovers that led them to the principal's office in a 5-4 loss to the Gwinnett Gladiators on 80's Night.
Capitalizing on a power-play the K-Wings flew out to an early lead. Finding a loose puck to the side of the net, Justin Taylor notched his sixth goal of the season 4:54 into the first period.
While the first period was a defensive struggle, the second period was an offensive explosion.
Josh Currie (10th) started the goal fest 1:21 into the second by pushing a wrister past netminder, Joel Martin.
The K-Wings penalty-kill recorded their league tying-best ninth shorthanded goal of the season, 5:59 into the stanza, when Chris Lawrence (3rd) finished off a Nick Sirota centering pass.
Marshall Everson's (8th) slap shot from between the circles pulled the Gladiators even midway in the period.
The see-saw scoring continued moments later, when Yannick Veilleux netted his fourth goal of the campaign by knocking in a Matt Firman rebound.
Goals from Antoine Corbin (4th) and Everson 51 seconds apart gave Gwinnett their first lead of the night.
The four goals allowed by the K-Wings in the middle frame are the most surrendered in a single period by the team.
The Gladiators extended the lead early in the third period with a tally from Evan Bloodoff (14th).
Attempting a comeback halfway in the period, Matt Caria (9th) extended his team-leading point streak to seven games with a slap shot to bring the K-Wings within a single goal.
Despite several scoring chances late in regulation, including a Brett Ponich wrister that bound off the crossbar with 1:30 remaining, the Gladiators were able to fend off the K-Wings.
The K-Wings will end the week on Saturday, January 18th with a 7:30 p.m. versus Gwinnett. Saturday night will be ZOOperstars! Night presented by Zoetis. While supplies last, Zoetis will be handing out seat cushions to fans as they enter Wings Stadium.
