November 5, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gwinnett Gladiators tallied three first period goals, while Cam Brown set the All Time ECHL Penalty minute record to help the Gladiators to a 6-1 victory over the Mississippi Sea Wolves in front of a record crowd of 11,355 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Friday night.
After a slow start, the Gladiators jumped ahead of the Sea Wolves at 10:39 of the opening period as Chris Durno took advantage of a power play sneaking the puck past netminder Matt Underhill. Jim Jackson and Jeff Campbell hooked up on the assist for the Gladiators goal.
Just 18 seconds later, Cam Brown capitalized on another Mississippi defensive breakdown as he edged his way in, jamming the puck past Underhill to give the Gladiators a 2 â 0 lead. Adam Smyth picked up an assist on the goal.
Gwinnett capped off a three goal opening period as Mike Vigilante tallied his fourth goal of the season at 14:10 of the first period. Dave McCulloch picked up an assist as he tapped the puck up ice to set up Vigilante.
Mississippi showed signs of life early in the second period as Jeff Hutchins capitalized on a Gladiators defensive breakdown 3:58 into the second period. Travis Lisabeth and Mike Martone connected on the assists.
Joe Bourne silenced the SeaWolves at 8:16 of the second period with his first goal of the season as he ripped a slap shot over the outstretched hand of Mississippi netminder Underhill. Kris Goodjohn picked up his third assist of the season as he fed a waiting Bourne at the point.
Early in the third period, Cam Brown was whistled for a double minor high sticking penalty just 1:49 into the period. With the four minutes, Brown tied the All Time ECHL Penalty Minute mark of 2,253 held by Brian Goudie. Brown's next penalty will push him into sole possession of the record.
Brett Engelhardt extended the Gladiators lead to four goals with his fourth goal of the season at 6:07 of the second period. The forward was able to jam the puck past Underhill for the tally as he took a rink wide pass from Brad Schell. Cam Brown also added an assist on the goal.
Mike Vigilante rounded out the scoring for the Gladiators with his second goal of the night at 13:29 of the final period. Brad Schell recorded his second assist of the evening on the goal to give the Gladiator a 6-1 lead.
Gwinnett outshot the Sea Wolves 36-21 while Gladiators goaltender T.J. Aceti made 20 saves in the win to help Gwinnett remain unbeaten with a 4-0-3 record.
