Condors Host Retirement Ceremony Saturday
November 5, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - During the tenth season of professional hockey in the city of Bakersfield, the Condors will hold a timely tribute to retire the numbers of three prominent past players on Saturday night, when the San Diego Gulls come to town for a 7:00 p.m. match.
The three players, Steve Dowhy, Glen Mears and Paul Willett, represent the history of hockey in the Golden Empire, with a combined 960 games played for two different teams and two different leagues in Bakersfield. Dowhy is the organization's all-time leader in goals (164) and points (410), is second in assists (246) and fifth in games (270). He played in Bakersfield during six seasons, performing most of his damage to opposing goaltenders while a member of the Bakersfield Fog from 1995-1998. He finished in the top 11 in West Coast Hockey League in scoring in all four of his full seasons and was named 1st Team All-WCHL in 1996-97. His number 74 will now be retired.
Glen Mears returned to the Condors lineup in 2003-04 after sitting out an entire season. He has suited up for 372 games between the Fog and Condors, and is sixth all-time in team scoring with 166 points - the most of any defenseman in Bakersfield history. He is one minute ahead of Willett in the penalty minute category for first all-time with 830. Number 26 played seven seasons in Bakersfield, starting with the 1996-97 campaign and was named 1st Team All-WCHL in 1996-97 and a WCHL All-Star in 1998-99.
Paul Willett's career with the Condors continues off the ice this season, as he now stands behind the bench as the team's assistant coach. Willett called it a career after 14 pro seasons, and five with the organization. He laid claim to the only scoring title in Bakersfield history, turning the feat in the 2002-03 WCHL season, and finished his Condors career with 388 points and a team-record 258 assists. While a member of the Condors, fans were a witness to Number 16's 300th career goal, 1,000th career point and his 900th career game. Willett was a WCHL All- Star twice, won the WCHL MVP in 1999-2000 and All- WCHL selection twice.
In addition, everyone that comes to the game will receive a Condors poster featuring all three players, sponsored by KKEY-TV 11, KERN 1410 and SBC Smart Yellow Pages. The trio will be available for autographs at the end of the night at the Holiday Inn Select Autograph Table, located near the front doors of the arena.
The first Season Ticket Holder Meet-the-Team Party will be held after the game on Saturday night as well in the lower level. All season ticket holders will have to access the lower level through the beige doors behind section 110 immediately following the game and will require either a ticket stub from that night's game or their season ticket holder ID card for admission. Snacks and beverages will be available.
All games, home and away, can be heard live on KGEO AM 1230 with "Condors Countdown" starting 15 minutes prior to faceoff.
