
Gladiators Fall to Chekers, 5-4

Mike Stathopoulos tallied a goal and added two assists but it wasn't enough to help the Gladiators past a hat trick by Dusty Jamieson and the Checkers in a 5-4 loss on Friday night at the Cricket Arena. Charlotte jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 3:18 into the first period. Dusty Jamieson gave the Checkers a 1-0 lead just 21 seconds into the first period jamming home a shot past Gladiators netminder Adam Berkhoel. Jason Dawe and Mike Harder had the assists on the goal moving the puck around the slot.
Ryan Glenn pushed the Checkers lead to 2-0 at 3:18 of the opening period as ripped a shot past Berkhoel off a feed from Mike Harder for the go ahead goal.
Mike Stathopoulous got the Gladiators on the board at 6:09 of the second period picking up a drop pass and ripping a snapshot over the shoulder of Charlotte netminder Alex Westlund to the glove side. Cam Brown dropped the puck for Stathopoulos off a feed from Peter Flache to pick up the assists on the goal.
Jamieson's second goal of the game gave the Checkers a 3-1 heading into the first intermission beating Berkhoel on a breakaway with 3:09 remaining in the period. Rory Rawlyk and Mike Harder added the assists on the goal moving the puck up the wing to Jamieson for the assists.
Andrew Oke tallied his first goal as a Gladiator sliding across the blue line and beating Westlund with a slapshot from the right wing point. Kris Goodjohn fed Oke for the Gladiators second goal as Jeff Campbell also picked up a helper on tally 4:05 into the second period.
Charlotte regained the two-goal lead three minutes later on a slapshot by Kenton Smith from the right wing circle over the glove of Berkhoel on the power play. Rawlyk and Dawe added the assists on the tally punching the puck up the wing past to a waiting Smith.
The Gladiators tied the game up at 4-4 with two goals 21 seconds apart, midway through the third period. Cam Brown picked up a loose puck off a face off along the bottom of the left wing face off circle and rolled the puck past Westland for the tally at 11:22 of the final period. Stathopoulous added an assist on the goal.
Lane Manson's slapshot from the blue line deflected off the stick of Westland and into the back of the net to tie the game at four. Stathopoulos and Sawruk added the helpers on the goal moving the puck around the Charlotte zone to set up the goal at 11:43 of the final period.
Jamieson tallied the game winner as he compled the hat trick at 13:57 of the third period beating Berkhoel on his second breakaway of the game. Kenton Smith and Mike Harder added the assists on the game-winning goal.
Gwinnett hosts the Florida Everblades on Saturday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center at 7:35 p.m. Carnations will be given to the first 500 ladies through the doors courtesy of Kabloom at Saturday's contest.
