Columbia, SC -The Louisiana IceGators gave up three goals on odd man rushes, as the Columbia Inferno survived a late rally to defeat the Gators 3-2 in Columbia on Friday night.
The Gators took a 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of play as Wes Mason, scored his team leading 21st goal of the season. Jim Shepherd did the dirty work, tying up three Inferno players in the high slot, allowing Mason to steal the puck ,walk in alone on Rob McVicar and slide the puck on a forehand move into the back of the net. Chris Thompson added the other assist on the only goal of the 1st period.
The Inferno answered with 2 goals in the second period to take a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes, both goals coming on odd man rushes by Columbia. At 4:13, D'Arcy McConvey (13) converted a centering pass from Bryson Busniuk to capitalize on a three on one rush, to tie the game at 1-1. Then on a three on two rush, Tim Smith (1) slipped a wrist shot over Nathan Marsters to give Columbia a 2-1 cushion. The goal coming at 9:13 of the period.
Locked out, Buffalo Sabre, Eric Boulton(6) tallied the game winner at 4:07 of the 3rd period. As the trailer on a three on two, Boulton snapped the puck top shelf on Marsters for a 3-1 Inferno lead. A Mason (22) wrist shot 57 seconds later cut the Inferno advantage to 3-2. Despite firing 14 more shots at McVicar, the Gators could not get the equalizer. With the loss, Louisiana's record is now 17-24-3, 37 points and 5th place in the South. The Gators and Inferno had 31 shots apiece. Power plays were 0-0 for the Gators and 0-1 for the Inferno. The 2 minutes in penalties is a new Gator record for fewest penalty minutes in a game, as is the combined total of 2 minutes for the game. The Gators next game is a return match against the Columbia Inferno, with a special 3:05pm opening faceoff..
