Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – As quickly as they had come from Hartford, four of the six players sent down from the Checkers AHL affiliate were recalled. The Checkers entered tonight's contest with just fourteen skaters to face the Gwinnett Gladiators, a team that had not lost in four games. Inspired by a special crowd of 5,929 fans, the Checkers ended Gwinnett's streak and continued one of their own. By winning 5-4, the Checkers have now won three in a row.

Just twenty one seconds into the first, Checkers forward Dusty Jamieson beat Gwinnett's goaltender, Adam Berkhoel, on a pass from Jason Dawe. Mike Harder was also credited with an assist, his first of three assists on the night. Ryan Glenn put the Checkers up 2-0 on his third goal of the season. Later in the first, Jamieson got his second goal of the night on a breakaway pass from Rory Rawlyk. Gladiator Mike Stathopoulos put Gwinnett on the board, making it 3-1 after the first.

Each team saw a goal in the second. Gwinnett‘s Andrew Oke put the Gladiators back in the game with a goal early in the period. Kenton Smith answered on a Checkers power play goal to extend their lead 4-2.

With two goals in twenty one seconds of the third, the Gladiators tied the score at 4-4. Charging down the ice, Jamieson put his third goal of the evening between the pipes. As is tradition, the hats came flying onto the ice in honor of Jamieson's hat trick. This was Jamieson's third game-winning goal of the season.

"He [Jamieson] played up to his ability tonight. He was dynamic. He's a game breaker type of player," commented Checkers Head Coach Derek Wilkinson.

Tomorrow afternoon, select Charlotte Checkers players will be out at Charlotte Catholic High School to support the Special Olympics North Carolina Southeast Region floor hockey competition from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday night, the Checkers travel to face the Pee Dee Pride in Florence, SC at 7:30 p.m.
