Gladiators clip Checkers, 5-4

Milan Gajic and Guillaume Desbiens each posted two goals for the Gladiators to help Gwinnett to a 5-4 win over the Charlotte Checkers on Thursday night in Charlotte. Gwinnett remains in first place in the ECHL South Division pushing their winning streak to five games with the win.

Gajic gave the Gladiators a 1-0 lead just 29 seconds into the first period as he walked down the right wing wall and ripped a slapshot over the shoulder of Charlotte netminder Chris Holt for the tally. Derek Nesbitt picked up the assist on the goal as he helped move the puck through the neutral zone feeding Gajic down the right wing wall.

Gwinnett took a 2-0 lead on Guillaume Desbiens 21st goal of the season walking in from the left wing point and ripping a shot past Holt for the tally at 9:25 of the first period. Jeff Campbell fed Desbiens at the left wing point to pick up an assist on the tally. Jon Awe also collected a helper on the marker. Charlotte got on the board with a goal by Dusty Jamieson just 49 seconds after Desbiens tally as he beat Gladiators goaltender Sean Fields on a breakaway. Bruce Graham and Jeff Doyle hooked up to pick up the assists on the Charlotte goal.

Scott Mifsud regained the two goal advantage for the Gladiators redirecting a centering feed from Cam Brown in the right wing circle past Holt for his 12th goal of the season. Adam Smyth picked up an assist on the tally at 10:31 mark of the first period getting the puck up on the wing to Brown to help set up the goal.

Peter Worrell got the Checkers back within a goal at the 12:29 mark of the first period on the power play. Parked in the left wing circle, Worrell took a pass from Jake Ortmeyer at the right wing point and whipped the puck past Fields for the tally. Luke Stauffacher also had an assist on the goal.

In the second, Gwinnett regained the two-goal advantage on Milan Gajic's second goal of the game 9:23 into the second period. Campbell sprung Gajic on the breakaway to set up the tally. Brad Schell also had an assist on the power play goal for Gwinett.

Ryan Fultz pulled the Checkers within a goal as he slid behind a Gladiators defenseman and beat Fields on a breakaway. Rory Rawlyk picked up an assist on the goal scored at 11:09 of the second period springing Fultz on the breakaway.

Dusty Jamieson finished a 2-on-1 break for the Checkers burying a snapshot past Fields to tied the game two goals apiece. Jeff Doyle threaded the puck past a Gladiators defenseman to set up Jamieson on the goal at 16:04 of the second period.

Guillaume Desbiens gave the Gladiators a 5-4 lead with his second tally of the night. Set up on the power play, Desbiens took a clearing attempt from behind the net from Derek Nesbitt and beat Glass for what proved to be the game winner at 5:59 of the third period. Campbell also picked up an assist on the tally for the Gladiators.

Sean Fields made 23 saves in the win to help the Gladiators improve to 28-9-5 on the season and remain in first place in the ECHL South Division.
