Former ECHL Goaltender Named Co-MVP

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Former Greenville Grrrowl and current Norfolk Admirals
center Martin St. Pierre scored two goals to lead the Canadian All-Stars to
a 9-4 win over the PlanetUSA All-Stars in the 2006 American Hockey League
All-Star Game in front of 15,015 on Wednesday at MTS Centre.
Former Greensboro Monarchs and current Manitoba goaltender Wade Flaherty
started for the Canadian All-Stars and stopped 12 of 13 shots to earn
Co-Most Valuable Player with teammate Yann Denis. Denis stopped 12 of 13
shots in the second period while Dany Sabourin, who played with Johnstown,
Las Vegas and Wheeling, made nine saves in the third period.
In addition to Flaherty, Sabourin and St. Pierre, the Canadian roster had
former ECHL players Layne Ulmer and Lawrence Nycholat and assistant coach
Kjell Samuelsson. Former Wheeling right wing Michel Ouellet was named to
the Canadian roster, but did not play as he is in the NHL with Pittsburgh.
Ouellet was among the leading candidates for NHL Rookie of the Month after
scoring 14 points (8g-6a) in 15 games in January.
PlanetUSA captain Eric Healey, who played in the ECHL for Jackson, had a
goal and an assist while Keith Aucoin, who played in the ECHL with Florida,
added an assist.
In addition to Healey and Aucoin, PlanetUSA had former ECHL players Patrick
Rissmiller and Thomas Pock as well as assistant coach Al Sims. Tim Thomas,
who played for Birmingham in the ECHL, was named to the PlanetUSA roster,
but did not play as he is in the NHL with Boston. Thomas recorded his first
NHL shutout on Monday making 44 saves in a 5-0 win at Ottawa that improved
his record to 6-1-2 in nine consecutive starts.
The ECHL has affiliations with 21 of the 27 teams in AHL and there are 80
players in the ECHL who are on contracts with AHL teams and for the past 16
years there has been a former ECHL player on the team that has won the
Calder Cup.
