Hot start helps Gwinnett to 5-4 win over Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Gwinnett Gladiators defeated the Charlotte Checkers 5-4 in front of 4,205 fans Thursday at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Guillaume Desbiens scored two goals for the Gladiators including the game winner on a power play at the 5:59 mark of the third period.

The Gladiators opened up the night on a Milan Gajic goal 29 seconds into the game. Desbiens notched his first goal of the night at the 9:23 mark as Gwinnett jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Charlotte cut into the lead with a goal by Dusty Jamieson at the 10:12 mark of the first, but Gwinnett pushed the lead back to two on a goal by Scott Mifsud just 19 seconds later.

The Checkers scored the final goal of the first period as Peter Worrell found the back of the net cutting the Gwinnett lead to 3-2.

Charlotte outscored Gwinnett 2-1 in the second period despite being outshot 9-17. Ryan Fultz scored a goal in his first game back from a back injury and Jamieson added the second goal of the period for the Checkers. Gajic scored his second goal of the night for Gwinnett's loan goal in the second period.

Gwinnett scored the only goal of the third period as Desbeins notched his second of the night and earned the First Star of the game. Gajic was the Second Star and Jamieson was the Third Star.

Both teams went 2-of-7 on power play chances and Gwinnett outshot Charlotte 38-27 overall in the game. Sean Fields picked up the win for Gwinnett making 23 saves. Jeff Glass took the loss for Charlotte making 29 saves after replacing Chris Holt midway through the first period. Holt stopped 4-of-7 shots in 10:45 minutes of action.
