Gladiators bitten by Snakes, 4-3

The Gladiators dropped their fourth straight game as they fell to the Columbus Cottonmouths 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night at the Columbus Civic Center.

The Gladiators jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Jim Jackson slipped untouched down the left wing wall, into the slot and lifted a back hand shot over the shoulder of Columbus netminder Jason Tapp. Jackson scored the unassisted goal at 9:01 of the first period.

After the Gladiators had a goal disallowed, Columbus' Marc-Andre Thinel tied the contest at one. Thinel took a pass from Colin Pepperall and slipped into the slot and beat Prior at 12:43 of the opening stanza.

Rick Emmett regained the lead for the Gladiators as he picked up a loose puck in the slot and flipped it over Tapp at 5:28 of the second period. Kevin Doell and Brandon Dietrich each added an assist on the power play goal.

Columbus tied the game up at 2-2 on Matt Shasby's slap shot from the left point that trickled past Prior at 9:45 of the middle period. Carlyle Lewis added an assist on the power play goal for the Cottonmouths.

Brandon Dietrich gave the Gladiators a 3-2 lead 28 seconds into the third period as he ripped a rebound over the shoulder of netminder Tapp. Steve Slonina and Troy Milam added the assists on the goal.

Marc Andre Thinel tied the game up at three as he beat Prior with just 8 seconds left in the third period. Colin Pepperall added an assist on the goal scored with an extra attacker.

Matt Shasby scored the game winner at 1:39 of the overtime session on an odd man rush. Thinel fed Shasby to pick up an assist on the goal. Trevor Prior made 26 saves in the loss for the Gladiators who fall to 23-16-4 on the season in the overtime loss.
