Peoria, Ill. (January 31, 2004) – The Peoria Rivermen had not scored a power play in six games but used three to beat the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night by a 4-1 score in front of 6,021 at Carver Arena.

Peoria entered the game 0-for-20 on the power play over its last six games. It was just the second time the Rivermen tallied three man advantage markers in a game this season; they scored three (3-for-7) in a 7-0 win over the Wheeling Nailers on October 24 at Carver Arena. The Rivermen were 3-for-7 with the man advantage, while Cincinnati was 0-for-6.

The Rivermen netted their third power play goal to seal the victory at 17:33 of the third. Marty Johnston took a pass from Bret DeCecco in the left wing corner and powered the puck to the goal, cutting in underneath a defenseman and slipping the puck through the legs of Cincinnati goaltender Tyler Masters. It was Johnston's ninth tally of the year and fifth in a Rivermen uniform.

Peoria pushed its lead to 3-1 at 3:54 of the third period. DeCecco chipped the puck up to Tyler Rennette, who broke into the Cincinnati zone on right wing and rocketed a shot from the top of the right face-off circle into the upper right corner. It was Rennette's 18th tally of the season.

Peoria (24-12-7, 55 points) improved to 10-8-3 on home ice and is averaging 4.20 goals per game when victorious at Carver Arena. The Rivermen, who lost 4-1 to the Cyclones last night, improved to 7-4-0 against them this season. Cincinnati (20-23-2, 42 points) dropped to 9-13-0 on the road and failed to equal a season-high, three-game winning streak.

Peoria's Mike Valley turned away 21 of 22 chances in his 13th win of the season (13-5-5). Masters stopped 35 of 39 shots in his seventh loss of the season (5-7-1).

The Cyclones jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 35 seconds into the game. After a neutral zone turnover, Jade Galbraith jumped into the Peoria zone down the middle of the ice, feeding a breaking Terry Marchant in the left face-off circle for a wicked snap shot goal just inside the right post. It was Marchant's 16th tally of the season.

Peoria evened the game at 1-1 at 16:59 of the first on the power play. Joe Vandermeer fired a shot at the Cincinnati goal from the right point. The shot was stopped by Masters but the rebound came right to Colin Hemingway, who was stationed at the top of the goal crease and slapped it home for his first goal in a Rivermen uniform and third of the year.

Peoria grabbed its first lead of the night with its second power play goal at 12:26 of the second. Chad Starling wristed a shot from the right point that Masters stopped but Adam Edinger was on the doorstep to poke a backhand shot through Masters' legs. It was Edinger's 11th goal of the season.

Tomorrow afternoon – Sunday, February 1 – the Rivermen face off against the archrival Toledo Storm. Special game time is 1:00 p.m. to accommodate the Super Bowl. It is another Journal Star/Insight Media Family Day. Kids 12 and Under receive a $2 Upper Bowl admission. Kids meals are available for $2.50 and the first 1,000 will include a Mike Valley player card. Chuckie from the Rugrats will appear courtesy of Nickelodeon.
