
Gladiators Beat South Carolina, 4-3 in shootout

Mike Vigilante posted the only goal in the shoot out in the 6th round while Sean Fields made 29 saves to help the Gladiators past the South Carolina Stingrays 4-3 on Friday night in North Charleston. South Carolina took a 1-0 lead as Kevin Spiewak took a centering pass from Rich Peverley in the bottom of the left wing faceoff circle and beat Gladiators netminder Sean Fields over the right shoulder 2:26 into the first period. Marty Clapton also picked up an assist on the goal for the Stingrays.
John Jarram gave the Stingrays a 2-0 lead sliding in from the right point and beating Fields to the short side. Marty Clapton added an assist as he fed Jarram moving in from the point. Robin Gomez also added an assist on the goal.
Jeff Campbell got the Gladiators on the board with 5:05 left in the first period intercepting a South Carolina breakout pass and beating Stingray netminder Justin Eddy. Campbell picked off the pass at the blue line and walked down the wing before ripping the shot from a bad angle along the bottom of the left wing faceoff circle.
Sean Fields made two key glove saves midway through the second period on a 2-on-1 break to keep the Stingrays from extending their lead in the middle stanza.
Brad Schell tied the game at 2-2 with a slap shot as he walked into the South Carolina zone and beat Eddy over the shoulder with a seeing-eye shot into the upper left corner over the netminder's shoulder. Mike Vigilante added an assist on the tally at 6:29 of the third period moving through the neutral zone.
Joe Tenute regained the lead for South Carolina beating Fields in a pile up in front of the Gladiators net at the 11:51 mark of the third period. Craig Olynick and Trevor G. Johnson added the assists on the goal.
Gwinnett tied the game up at 3-3 on Randy Dagenais' slapshot from the high slot with 47 seconds left in the third period with Fields pulled in favor of an extra attacker. Jim Jackson and Kris Goodjohn added the assists.
Fields and the Gladiators killed off a penalty early in the overtime session and pushed the game to a shootout where Sean Fields turn aside all six South Carolina shooters as Mike Vigilante posted the only goal in the shootout for the win. Sean Fields made 29 saves in the win for Gwinnett as the Gladiators improve to 24-15-7 on the season.
The Gladiators travel to Greenville on Saturday before hosting the Charlotte Checkers at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Sunday.
