Lynx heel Grrrowl in penalty-filled affair
February 18, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
Augusta Lynx fans got absolutely everything they could want in a hockey game on Friday night: great goaltending, goal scoring, a 3-0 win over the Greenville Grrrowl, and fights. Lots of them.
A total of 158 minutes in penalties, 138 of which were called in the second period, overshadowed what was an otherwise well-played game by the Lynx. Two separate shifts in the second stanza resulted in 62 minutes in penalties each, totaling six fighting majors, six 10-minute misconducts, and three game misconducts.
Augusta quickly jumped into the lead just 1:35 into the contest on a Dan Sullivan marker from Jamie Johnson and Sean Connolly. Sullivan took a Johnson pass at the side of the net and converted it past Mike Brodeur for a 1-0 Lynx lead. Louis Goulet scored in the second period to boost August in front 2-0, jumping into the rush to outnumber the Grrrowl defense and take an Eric Johansson drop pass in the slot to set up the tally.
During the celebration, Treavor Peterson, who also added a helper on the goal, tied up with Carl Mallette near the Grrrowl blue line to touch off the first of the aforementioned 62 penalty minute donnybrooks. Jason Metcalfe jumped into the fray and was handed a fighting major, ten minute misconduct, and game misconduct. Other penalties were assigned and the game went back to action.
Then, at 19:18 of the second period, fracas number two touched off after a solid Phil Cole body check touched off a scrum in front of Jason Saal, with Saal getting the stick up with Simon Ferguson. Sean Connolly moved in on Ferguson, while Cole and Kevin Bergin squared off, followed by Jarrett Thompson and Vladimir Gusev at center ice. The bout ended when Thompson ripped the jersey off Gusev's back and skated away from him, and both picked up five and a game for being the second altercation during a stoppage in play. The second period ended 2-0 in favor of the Lynx.
In the third, the game calmed down somewhat, with only six minutes whistled in total against the two clubs. Johansson would wrap up the scoring on the power play from Connolly and Goulet at 12:50 when the puck was dumped into the Greenville zone, kicked off a glass stanchion and sat at the side of a wide-open net for Johansson to put past Brodeur, who was at the opposite post awaiting the puck that never came.
With the win, Augusta improves to 18-24-7 on the year. Jason Saal made 26 saves for his third shutout of the season, coming up with two spectacular diving blocker saves during the contest to keep his donut intact. Brodeur made 34 saves in the loss.
The Lynx are back at it again Saturday night when they host the Pee Dee Pride at 7:35 pm. Tickets are on sale now through the Lynx office at (706) 724-4ICE, at all TicketMaster locations, and on line at www.TicketMaster.com.
