Tacoma Rainiers News Release
EL PASO, Texas -- Sam Gaviglio tossed 6.0 strong innings and Carlos Rivero homered as the Tacoma Rainiers topped the El Paso Chihuahuas 10-2 at Southwest University Park on Saturday night.
Gaviglio, in his first career Triple-A start, limited the Chihuahuas to one unearned run on six hits through 6.0 frames. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out three and walked two on the way to collecting a win in his first appearance as a Seattle Mariners minor leaguer.
The third baseman Rivero led Tacoma at the plate after breaking open a scoreless game with a two-out, three-run home run in the second inning. Rivero has now hit safely in each of the Rainiers first three games this season, and is batting .615 (8x13) with two home runs and five RBI since April 9.
Stefen Romero upped the lead to 4-0 when he lined a run-scoring triple to centerfield with one out in the fifth. Romero has also collected hits in each of his first three games to start the season, posting a .438 batting average with three extra-base hits, six RBI and three runs scored.
Outfielder Franklin Gutierrez accounted for a pair of runs in the contest, beginning with a sacrifice fly that scored Romero in the fifth. Gutierrez went on to hit a solo home run that lead off the bottom of the ninth inning.
In the first game of a Major League rehab appearance with the Rainiers, shortstop Chris Taylor went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored before exiting the game after five innings. Taylor was placed on the Mariners 15-Day Disabled List with a fractured wrist on March 27.
The Rainiers (2-1) look to secure a series win in the final game of the club's four-game series at El Paso (1-2) tomorrow, April 12. Left-hander Mike Kickham (NR) is expected to start for Tacoma against Chihuahuas right-hander James Needy (NR). First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
