New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The Omaha Storm Chasers struck for three runs in the first inning, and held off each Zephyrs scoring opportunity to defeat New Orleans on Saturday night, 5-1.
After waiting out a rain delay of more than two hours, Omaha took advantage of two walks by Zephyrs starter Adam Conley en route to a three-run rally. Moises Sierra followed the back-to-back free passes with a two-run double to the right field wall, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cheslor Cuthbert.
Conley rebounded from his early command issues to retire seven consecutive batters before a two-out homer by Brett Eibner in the fourth, boosting the Omaha lead to 4-0.
The Z's got on the board in the bottom half of the frame when Jordany Valdespin and Cole Gillespie drew back-to-back walks from Storm Chasers starter Christian Binford.
With two outs, Brady Shoemaker's grounder slipped past a diving Ryan Jackson at shortstop to allow Valdespin to score, but Binford escaped further damage when Derek Dietrich lined out to first base to end the threat.
Shoemaker's hit was the only one the Zephyrs could muster in 13 at-bats with runners in scoring position. New Orleans stranded two runners on base in five different innings, and is now batting .167 (6-for-36) with runners in scoring position through the season's first three games.
Omaha added an insurance run in the ninth on a bases-loaded single by Jose Martinez against Carter Capps, who allowed three hits and issued an intentional walk in his first action since Thursday's appearance that included two illegal pitch rulings by the umpires.
After allowing just one run over his last four starts at Zephyr Field last year, Conley (0-1) was charged with four runs on five hits in six innings to suffer the loss.
Joe Paterson (1-0) was credited with the victory by pitching 1 2/3 hitless frames in relief of Binford, who lasted just four innings despite allowing one run and four hits.
The Zephyrs and Storm Chasers conclude the season-opening four-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m. Right-hander Andre Rienzo will make his Zephyrs debut against Omaha righty Yohan Pino.
