Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Grizzlies (2-2) loaded the bases with one out in the ninth down a run, but Alex Presley bounced into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to end the comeback attempt against the Las Vegas 51s (2-2) in front of 5,922 fans Sunday afternoon at Chukchansi Park. The 8-7 loss gave the Grizzlies a series split to open the 2015 season as they now welcome the Salt Lake Bees to town beginning Monday night at 6:35 p.m. for a four-game set at Chukchansi Park.
The game went back and forth for much of the day as Fresno DH Matt Duffy launched a towering two-run homer in the first to give the club a 2-0 lead. Las Vegas countered and went up 4-2 by the top of the sixth, only to see the lead get taken away with a go-ahead two-run double by Matt Dominguez that scorched the left field foul line. Armed with a one-run lead, the Fresno bullpen couldn't hold, surrendering four runs (two on bases-loaded walks) over the final three innings to put them in an 8-5 hole by the bottom of the ninth.
Despite the disadvantage, Fresno was in a position to win when they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Matt Duffy collected a two-run single to bring the club within a run, while Preston Tucker walked and a pitch hit Max Stassi in the head, setting the table for outfielder Alex Presley to either tie or win the game. The center fielder, who arrived into Fresno the day before, was 2-for-4 going into the at-bat, but bounced into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Duffy finished the four-game series against Las Vegas 5-for-17 with a homer and eight RBI. The Grizzlies look to end their small two-game losing streak as they open a four-game set with the Salt Lake Bees, Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, tomorrow night at Chukchansi Park. All games for the four-game set begin at 6:35 p.m., with gates opening to the general public at 5:35 p.m. Fans are urged to take advantage of the $20 Must Catch Monday deal, presented by The Fresno Bee, which includes two Monday field level reserve game tickets, two Fresno Chaffee Zoo vouchers, two Blackbeard's Mini Golf vouchers, and two John's Incredible Pizza Company vouchers.
