Gameday: Adirondack vs. Reading
January 16, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Adirondack Thunder News Release
TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Tonight is the fifth straight home game for the Adirondack Thunder as they take on their East Division rivals the Reading Royals for the fourth time this season. The Thunder will be looking for their 12th win of the year at the Glens Falls Civic Center and their fourth on the current five game homestand.
KENT STOP, WONT STOP: Thunder goalie Kent Simpson stopped all 31 shots that came his way to help Adirondack get a 1-0 win over the Norfolk Admirals on Tuesday. Simpson became the third Thunder goalie, joining Drew Fielding and Ken Appleby to record a shutout this season, something only two other ECHL teams, Reading and South Carolina, have done so far this season. Simpson saved his finest effort for last, as he made a right pad save on a Steven Whitney one-timer from the lower right hand circle with just under 10 seconds to play.
KING (MAC)ARTHUR: Peter MacArthur was the only player to light the lamp for either side in the last game the Thunder played, but it turned out to be enough in the 1-0 victory over Norfolk. Since he joined the Thunder in late December, MacArthur has registered five points (2-3-5) in 11 games played, in addition to a shootout winner on 12/31.
ZERO DARK THIRTY: With an assist in Tuesday night's win, Michael Kirkpatrick became one of only a handful of ECHL players to reach 30 points (14-16-30) or more at this point in the season. The North Sydney, NS native is in the ECHL's top twenty in scoring (tied for 17th), while he is also tied for fifth amongst first year players.
HAVEN'T YOU HEARD: The Thunder received reinforcements at forward as Mitchell Heard was reassigned to Adirondack from the AHL's Stockton Heat. Heard appeared in four AHL games with Stockton, collecting his first point of the season, an assist, in a 2-1 loss to Ontario on December 29. Heard is second on the Thunder in scoring this season with 23 points (9-14-23) and leads the team in points per game (.96), plus/minus (+13) and penalty minutes (71).
CUTTING THE POWER: Adirondack managed to kill off all four power-play chances on Tuesday night, the fifth game in a row they have been able to do so, constituting 18 straight penalty kills, dating back to a 3-2 win over Reading on January 3. The Thunder have climbed back over the 80% mark on the penalty kill, sitting at 81.4 percent on the season.
JUST STAY COM: The Royals' Adam Comrie comes into tonight's game at the top of the ECHL's scoring charts amongst blueliners. Comrie enters the weekend with 34 points (15-19-34), tied for sixth in the ECHL in scoring and first amongst defensemen. The former Florida Panthers draft pack has collected 15 (6-9-15) of his point on the power play, placing him tied for third in the league.
