THE MATCHUP
The South Carolina Stingrays start a four-game homestand this evening when they host the Alaska Aces. The Stingrays are coming off three straight losses away from home including a 4-1 defeat last night in Atlanta. Marcus Perrier had the lone goal for South Carolina in the loss. The Aces conclude an east coast road trip in the Lowcountry after visiting Atlanta and Greenville. They beat the Swamp Rabbits on Thursday night, 3-2, and have claimed points in the standings in their past five games.
RARE VISIT FROM ALASKA
This weekend is only the third and fourth matchup between the Alaska Aces and South Carolina Stingrays in regular season play since the Aces joined the ECHL in 2003. South Carolina beat Alaska 4-1 at the North Charleston Coliseum on March 16, 2004 and 4-3 in a shootout on March 19, 2004 in the only two matchups in the regular season between the two clubs. The last time the Aces and Stingrays met outside of the regular season was during the 2009 Kelly Cup Finals. South Carolina won the series, 4-3, to claim the organization's third Kelly Cup. South Carolina Head Coach Spencer Carbery was a player on the Stingrays 2009 Championship Team.
HAAR'S BACK
Former Stingray defenseman Garrett Haar returns to the Lowcountry as a member of the Aces this evening. Haar spent last season with South Carolina, skating in 35 games and scoring 16 points (four goals, 12 assists). His strong start earned him a place in the 2015 ECHL All-Star Game in Orlando. This season with the Aces, Haar has eight points (one goal, seven assists).
LOOKING FOR OFFENSE
Heading into tonight's game, the Stingrays have dropped four of the past five games. In those losses, the Stingrays have scored two or fewer goals. The Stingrays are averaging 2.68 goals per game. That mark is 22nd in the ECHL.
GILLIES HITS 700
Tonight is the 700th game in Trevor Gillies' North American professional career. He has skated in 57 NHL games, 409 AHL games, and 233 ECHL games. Gillies has also spent time overseas, including a stop with Vityaz Chekhov in the KHL in Russia. ?
The two teams meet tomorrow at 3:05 pm. for Frozen Day, featuring the princesses and the snowman from the movie in attendance plus $5 Kids Tickets and $5 Kids Meals as part of the Crews Subaru and Charleston County Parks Family Days. Tickets information is available at StingraysHockey.com.
Tickets to both games this weekend are available via Ticketmaster online or at the North Charleston Coliseum Box Office.
