January 16, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release
Glens Falls, NY - The Reading Royals (---------loss, 18-15-2-3=41) of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, were defeated by the Adirondack Thunder (win, 23-9-1-1=48), affiliate of the Calgary Flames of the NHL, 2-0, at Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, New York.
Coming off the team's seventh shutout win of the year in Elmira on Friday, the Royals had the shutout table turned by the Adirondack Thunder, who snapped Reading's road unbeaten streak at nine (5-0-2-2). The Thunder capitalized on their first two power play chances of the night, while the Royals PP was held at bay despite six chances with the man advantage-including three in a row in the third period, when the Royals outshot the Thunder 18-7-all to no avail.
Adirondack got all they would need on the team's first power play chance of the game 15:15 into the first period. Ryan Constant drilled a hot shot from just inside the offensive blue line that Ouellette rejected. The rebound fell to the low slot, however, where Peter MacArthur made a quick put-back bid; Ouellette rejected that one with a brilliant kick move, but MacArthur got the puck right back and took a second bite, and despite another dramatic attempt by Ouellette to kick it out by with a last ditch scorpion move, the puck caught the underside of the cross-bar and bounded home for MacArthur's third of the season.
The Thunder got a bit of insurance on their second chance with the man advantage 4:04 into the second. Mitchell Heard, Ryan Culkin and Joe Faust worked the puck around the high pyramid several times before Faust found himself free enough in the right circle to attack to the face-off dot and rip a lot snap shot that slipped under and through Ouellette for his second of the year.
The Royals did not go into the night quietly. In the third, the team created any number of quality scoring chances, including at least three in a row for Yannick Tifu at one point. But the Thunder, thanks in no small part to the poised netminding of Appleby, put a zero on Reading for the second time this year.
The Royals and Thunder go at it again on Monday (January 18) in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Matinee at 1:00 pm at Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania. Fans who purchase a ticket to Monday's game also get a second ticket for FREE. Please note that parking in the RPA parking garages on Monday is just $2.00.
