Mavericks Split Weekend Series against Eagles - Missouri Falls 5-3 In
January 16, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
LOVELAND, CO- The Missouri Mavericks fell 5-3 to the Colorado Eagles Saturday evening, splitting their weekend series in their first visit to Loveland, CO since joining the ECHL. The loss is only the Mavs fourth regulation defeat of the 2015-16 season.
Andrew Courtney got the Mavs off to a quick start with a goal just 46 seconds into the game when he found himself perfectly positioned in front of net-minder Clarke Saunders to knock in a rebound. Trevor Ludwig and Sebastien Sylvestre and assisted on the play.
Colorado struck back midway through the frame and evened the scoreboard 1-1 when former Mavs' forward, Ludwig Karlsson, scored his first of two goals in the Saturday night contest. Derek Rodwell was credited with the lone assist on Karlsson's tally.
Jesse Mychan gained the lead for Colorado 5:00 into the second period with the help of Trent Daavettila and Collin Bowman. The Mavs answered back 4:46 later when David deKastrozza buried a puck into the Colorado net after Tanner Fritz forced a turnover deep in the Eagles' zone while Missouri was short-handed.
All tied up 2-2, the Eagles took note from the Mavs quick start and scored 54 seconds into the third period. Mychan notched his second goal of the night assisted by Daavettila.
Missouri tied the game up once more, 3-3, at 7:14 of the frame when Jesse Root scored on a Mavs power-play with Mychan in the penalty box, aided by Tyler Barnes and defenseman Kane Lafranchise.
Root's sixteenth goal of the season moves him ahead of teammate Barnes as the current leading goal-scorer of the Mavs. Root is on a 6-game point streak (3G, 5A) since he was reassigned to the Mavericks from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers- the Mavericks American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate.
Less than a minute after Root's game-tying goal, Karlsson scored again (assisted by Rodwell and Nyren) to give Colorado a 4-3 edge.
Tempers flared on the ice at the 11:00 mark of the final frame, resulting in multiple penalties to both teams, including goaltenders Stephon Williams and Clarke Saunders who were each dealt 5 minutes for fighting and a game misconduct, which ended their night in goal.
Josh Robinson and Eric Levine took their positions between the pipes for their respective teams for the remainder of regulation.
Despite the Mavericks efforts, they were unable to put another shot to the back of the Eagles' net, and pulled Robinson from goal in favor of an extra attacker with just under 2 minutes left in regulation. Colorado's Collin Bowman scored the empty net goal with 51 seconds left in the game to earn the Eagles a 5-3 victory over the league-leading Mavericks.
