Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
This is the game that just won't end...
The Aberdeen IronBirds split a double header last night with the Vermont Lake Monsters, winning the opener 10-7 and falling in the nightcap 3-2. In the opener, the IronBirds got a run in the top of the first when Jay Gonzalez walked to lead off the game and then stole second. Three batters later, Riley Palmer hit a ground ball into left field that scored Gonzalez, giving the IronBirds a 1-0 lead. The Lake Monsters scored three unanswered off of IronBirds' starter David Hess before the IronBirds scored four runs in the third on the strength of four consecutive base hits and two sac flies, getting them to within one at 6-5. Justin Viele scored on a passed ball in the top of the fourth to tie the game and the IronBirds went ahead for good in the fifth with three runs on three singles, two hit batters and a walk. All told, the first game took 2:57, the longest seven inning game in franchise history for both teams.
In the second game, the Lake Monsters jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings off of starter Lucas Long. Tanner Murphy, Jamill Moquete, and Hector Veloz hit back-to-back-to-back base hits in the fourth to get Aberdeen to within one at 3-2, but that's as close as they would get as they split the double header.
Third Time's...Another Split!
Last night was the IronBirds' third double header this season, all of them coming on the road. Their first twin bill came at Staten Island on July 7th, where the IronBirds lost the first game in a walk-off 3-2, before taking the nightcap 4-1. The second double header came at State College on July 31st where the IronBirds won 3-2 in the first game before falling in the second game 8-2.
Rennie Fantastic In Relief
Luc Rennie continues his resurgence in an IronBirds' uniform after picking up his second win of the season for Aberdeen. In four innings of relief in the first game last night, he allowed just three walks and one unearned run without allowing a base hit. He also tied a career high with seven strikeouts, which he set in Aberdeen last season against the Hudson Valley Renegades. He also has one save on the season.
On the Mound Tonight...
The IronBirds will send LHP John Means to the hill tonight. Last time out, he pitched against the Jamestown Jammers. He went a season long five innings and had a season high six strikeouts. He did not get a decision as the IronBirds fell 2-0 when the Jammers scored two runs late to take the win.
