Lowell Spinners News Release
FISHKILL, NY - Kevin McAvoy, Enfember Martinez and Ellis Jimenez combined to shut out the Hudson Valley Renegades Friday night as the Spinners topped the first place Gades, 5-0, as Dutchess Stadium.
Lowell (29-31) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning after Joseph Monge led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line. An error on a pick-off attempt moved Monge to third and he came around to score on a Jordan Betts sacrifice fly to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
The Spinners broke things open in the fifth inning. Nick Moore and Alixon Suarez had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and Deiner Lopez plated Moore with a single of his own, giving the Spinners a 2-0 lead. Raymel Flored followed with a bunt that Hudson Valley starter Enderson Franco threw away allowing both Suarez and Lopez to score and Flores to race to third base. Flores would score on a Monge sacrifice fly to extend the Spinners lead to 5-0.
Hudson Valley (40-21) had a chance to respond in the bottom half of the sixth inning, but Enfember Martinez got a pair of groundouts to end the inning, stranding a pair to preserve the Spinners shutout.
Pitching was the story for the Spinners as the team's hot August on the mound continued, as the team entered the game with a 2.79 earned run average in the month of August and only improved upon things. McAvoy started and allowed just one hit over three innings, walking one while striking out one. Martinez (1-0, 3.22) followed with three one-hit innings of his own, striking out three. Ellis Jimenez picked up his first save of the season with three scoreless innings of his own, allowing three hits while striking out three.
The series continues when Jake Drehoff (1-3, 4.44) looks to continue his recent string of strong outings when he gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
