Tigers Hold off IronBirds

Norwich, CT "" The Connecticut Tigers (32-29) defeated the Aberdeen IronBirds (21-39) by the final score of 4-3 Friday night at Dodd Stadium. RHP Johan Belisario (5-0) picked up his fifth win of the season after a nail biting finish. The IronBirds had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth inning before Belisario got 3B Cory Segui (0-4) to strike out swinging and SS Steve Wilkerson (1-5) to ground out and end the game. The Tigers snapped their three game losing streak.

With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, DH Steven Fuentes (1-4) hit a two out triple. With LF Kasey Coffman (2-4) up to the plate, IronBirds RHP Ivan Hernandez (1-2) threw a wild pitch that allowed Fuentes to score the go ahead run. The Tigers grabbed offensive support from Coffman who had a two hit and one RBI performance. RF Mike Gerber (1-4) chipped in with an RBI single. CF Derek Hill (3-4) entered tonight's game with just one hit in 16 at bats and put together a three hit performance that included two runs scored.

RHP Chase Edwards put together seven strong innings pitched in his no decision against Aberdeen. In his 12th start of the season, Edwards gave up three runs (one earned) on seven hits and struck out six batters over the seven innings he worked in. Belisario pitched two scoreless innings in the win and pushed his streak to 21.2 consecutive scoreless innings.

In game two of the three-game series, Tigers RHP Spencer Turnbull (0-2, 4.19) is slated to face IronBirds LHP Stephen Tarpley (2-3, 4.15). Tomorrow night is CT Tigers Hat Giveaway presented by Backus and Windham Hospitals and is for the first 1,000 fans. The pre-game begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1310 WICH and cttigers.com.
